In our family is has been required for generations that on New Year's Day you must eat sauerkraut. For good luck in the New Year, ya know :)
So we're having Reuben Sandwiches for supper tonight.
How about the rest of you? Any traditions in your group? Do you adhere to them?

Of course this is a "luck for the year" thing, but I don't believe in luck so I just pile it all on top of cornbread and go to town.

Actually, this tradition came down thru the Stuckey line in our family. They came from Alsace Lorraine, France. But that area was at different times in history under either France, Switzerland or Germany. So who knows? And it's very possible (even likely) that the Stuckeys actually migrated to the area from Switzerland a few generations prior.
My grandma always said of my grandfather (the Stuckey guy) that he was "German and Dutch and not worth much".
I found out how 2/3rds of that was true when I began doing our genealogy.

Yea,most of us are not pure anything. I hear people say" he is a pure German". I kinda doubt it especially if one has been in America for a few generations

I don't know that I am "pure"... but I know my people moved from Germany to Switzerland for a couple generations and then to America as a part of William Penn's experiment. I do know they were all German/Swiss for the past 15 generations. (Not that i have any great pride in this)

That is soooooooo true!!
Another thing I've learned doing genealogy is that, if your family has been here since the early days of our country, there is a high percentage of possibility that you are not completely one race either. There was alot of bad stuff going on between slave owners and slaves (NONE of us should be proud of that). There was also a good lot of inter-marriage and inter-other-stuff between the American Indians and those of non-Indian descent. Add to that all of the other inter-racial relationships that went on down thru the generations.
Makes me amazed that we even bother to put a "race" box on forms anymore.
I don't mean for this to become something to argue over. Just stating a bit of what I've learned over the years :)

and that's why the majority of the african Americans are much lighter then true africans from Africa.
I've noticed a lot of white caucasion people from Oklahoma have high cheek bones - they've mixed a lot with the native indians

That's true. If your ancestors stayed within the Amish or Mennonite culture for all those generations, you are probably one of a handful of groups in this country that can lay claim to being 'pure bred'.
Unfortunately, even within those groups, there are some who strayed. In my case, the Stuckeys would have been 'pure' until my great grandmother. At that point, she chose to walk away from her Amish/Mennonite upbringing and marry outside of her church.
On the other side of my family (my mother's side), her great grandparents were plantation owners in the south prior to and during the Civil War. They were also slave owners (a fact I hate, but can't change). The heritage of that family line is primarily Irish, but the entire family tends to be pretty dark skinned. I can't prove it, but my guess would be that there was probably some other stuff going on back then that I would be pretty ashamed of (because it would say to me that everyone was not necessarily being treated like the human beings that they should have been).
In another line of my family, my great great grandmother was pure blood Indian (from the Buffalo, New York area). Again, so much for "pure". :)
In the end, we are who we are. And God loves us all the same. But it's interesting to what kind of a mix we are.
Can you keep a secret?:christmoose

I guess if I had to eat sauer kraut today, I would just fast! That's one thing that I cannot tolerate. I ate salmon, rice & grilled veggies for lunch. We ate with another of our pastors and his wife. For dinner, I've got a roast in the oven. Not sure if it will be just me & Eddie, or if Zac and Rodney will be home by then.
I am spending all afternoon watching old videos of children's musicals, special services, etc. It's been a fun trip down memory lane! The one in right now, my son is about 14 and playing the bass in service. The youth pastor is getting ready to speak. God gave us a bunch of great people and I'm so thankful for them.

Thad, you are cruel.
The fact is they do do have some genetic disorders and hereditary diseases unique to their communities.
They do however enjoy much lower incidence of other common "diseases" such as alcoholism, obesity, diabetis, homosexulatilty, suicide and they have the highest incidence of twins in a known human population.

If the "fishy taste" bothers you, try putting in fresh chopped garlic! That's how I make the salmon pate.
But then reading the rest of your post perhaps you can't be helped! You don't like potatoes or seafood???? :)

Okay I'm sorry i offended you stephan. I was teasing but it was distasteful i realize. truth is, there aren't too many mennonites out here and a very small pool for them to marry from.
I have both a curiousity & admiration for the Amish/Mennonite community don't take this wrong, but there is a New(or newer?) book out that exposes a lot of secrecy and coverup that has been going on in those communities for years that outside authorities have looked the other way and allowed them to settle it with their own methods. however, according to the book(can't recall name of book), they don't believe in sending people to prison for the things that most of us would spend the rest of our lives behind bars for.

Walt's doing good. Thanks for asking. I was just thinking yesterday how he is such a changed man ever since he experienced the ruptured aneurism. He's MUCH more laid back. There's not the intense need to be perfect or best that there used to be. He just enjoys every day and every experience. And he loves deeper and more intensely than ever before in his life. I always knew he loved me (us), but have never felt as cherished or loved as deeply as I do now :)

These people do fight the same demons common to man and child molestation or abuse and rape does happen. I reject the notion that some have made that it is somehow MORE prevelant than society at large. (I am convinced it is much lower, myself) It is hard to get a sampling because they are a rather small segment of American society.
Regarding your statement that "they don't believe in sending people to prison" this is simply not true. Those were isolated cases, and it is not something practiced accross the board. They did struggle with the privacy issues for those who confessed to sins the same as other churches have. I don't think any denomination has NOT struggled with this.
As with other denominations the national critism in print and news media has had a positive effect in dealing with known predators in their communities.
SORRY I AM OFF TOPIC!!!

Every Hollywood celebrity or celebrity of any kind who comes to Toledo, usually goes to Packo's. They have sign one of their hotdog buns which they then seal somehow and then put up on their walls. You should see it!! You could spend days just reading the autographs on their walls.
