View Full Version : Another SONG Thread: What Still Moves You?

Steadfast

We presently have a thread that talks about the 'songs' that have been worn out and desperately NEED to be retired. Seems to be a great, fun thread. Had a lot of references to some 'old' songbook type songs (which, by the way, in spite of having kicking music I still love most of the old songs) and I noticed that there was a lot of fondness for some of them.

In that same vein of thought, I'm wondering the following:

* What ONE song still moves you after all these years?

You know what I mean... that one that just 'does it' every time you sing it... it still captivates your heart and moves you deep inside. That ONE song that still moves you to tears or makes you rejoice.

This should be interesting to say the least!

MINE? I love 'Amazing Grace' but probably the one that always reaches in my spirit is "Sweep Over My Soul".

Steady,

the songs that still move me in spite of their oft hearing are usually those that take me back to the point where grace intersected my sin and forgiveness met my repentance... Songs like Mercy Came Running, When God Ran, songs about mercy, forgiveness, restoration.

I probably am not that different from everyone else. I think most of us are moved by and love songs that relate closely to our life and salvation experiences.

There are actually many songs that move me. It just depends on what I'm going through at the time.

They pull out the big guns when they sing "Lord I Love You" by Nancy J. Grandquist. That songs moves me to the core of my being every time it's sung and played.

Kings and kingdoms shall all pass away, but there's something about that name.

God is so good to me,
He is so good to me,
More than this world could be,
He's so good to me,
His spirit came to me,
and gave me victory,
God is so good to me,
I can't complain.

I Love Him too much, to fail him now
Too much to break my vow
I promised the Lord, that I would make it somehow
I Love Him too much, to fail him now.

I've been on the mountain with Jesus
I've been in the valley so low
But not one time has He failed me
When to Him with my burdens I go

Let me walk with you Jesus
Don't ever leave me alone
For without You I could never
No, never make Heaven my home

Lord you found me, when I was so lonely
You found me, when I was so blue
You found me, when no one could help me
And I didn't know just what to do

So me walk with You Jesus.
Don't ever leave me alone.
For without You, I could never
No never make Heaven my home.

Well I can only tell of my experience of her. I was just a kid. She was an evangelist that was of mixed race. She wore a white skirt and blouse and a beautiful black and white silk cape. She sang and preached and many people were healed, as was I. And also many came to the Lord through her ministry.
I don't know if she is still living I think she is probably gone on to be with Jesus. I am not sure how old she was then but this was back in the 60's. And I don't remember where she was from. Our church was Emmanuel UPC church in Dallas with Bro. Paul Hosch as pastor.

I love that thought - vertical prayer and praise...It's not just singing about our troubles and trials but praising Him and telling Him our love for Him. Isn't much of the book of The Psalms about praising Him? Most of them are not about complaints or telling Him about what we need or WHINING - but it's about HIM and who HE is and about giving Him glory and magnifying His name. When we do that, the complaints and whining are overshadowed by His presence.

I love this chapter:

Psalm 51
1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

Yall got some old song books up in here!!!!!!!! ;)

Nah seriously some good songs and a ton I have never ever heard of! I guess our church was ummm either way behind or too progressive.. I would have to hope the latter... We did sing On Christ the Solid Rock at all of our Jessie Dixon concerts we did... so I have heard that one.. but we were also blessed with many songwriters in our church and I honestly think we did away with song books at least 20 yrs ago and maybe even possibly longer.

Blessed Assurance is one of my favorites too.

Of course Old Rugged Cross is a "Never Grow Old" song.

In Times like These comes to mind.

God is Good To Me by Loretta Earl has a very special place in my heart.. she sang it the night I accepted my call into the ministry. :)

This thread is great and brings back SOOOOOOOO many memories of great services and spiritual environments.

I suspect you're talking about the Sunday School boy being mauled by dogs when you mentioned the 'story'?

Speaking of 'remember', Wink... Our folks still talk about a message you preached here back near the 'genesis' of your Evangelizing when you preached (at least what they called it): "My Mom and Dad Ruined Me"

Talked about how your folks played the Rambos albums over and over and how, later, those nights in clubs, etc., were ruined by songs like "Don't Let Me Walk Too Far From Calvary" running through your memories.

There are many songs that still move me, I have a great fondness of music and music does get thru to me in a way that not much else can This is one of my favorite hymns.

THE LOVE OF GOD
1
THE LOVE OF JESUS TO ME IS GREATER
THAN ANYTHING ELSE I’VE EVER KNOWN
IT REACHES DEEPER, THAN ANY SIN STAIN
IT REACHES HIGHER THEN HEAVEN’S THRONE

CHO
THE LOVE OF GOD IS MORE TO ME
THAN ALL THIS WORLD COULD EVER BE
IT REACHES DOWN FROM
THE THRONE OF GLORY
AND SETS THE VILEST SINNER FREE

2
IT BROUGHT THE SAVIOR
FROM HEAVEN’S GLORY
TO GIVE HIS LIFE FOR A WORLD OF SIN
THO’ GOD OF HEAVEN, HE CONDESCENDED
TO PROVE TO YOU THAT HE IS YOUR FRIEND

3
IT GIVETH COMFORT TO THOSE IN SORROW
IT BRINGETH PEACE TO A TROUBLED SOUL
THE LOVE OF JESUS GOES IN THE BY-WAYS
TO SEEK THE SINSICK AND MAKE THEM THOLE

I include it in pray a lot when it is just me and God talking. I need him. I will never amount to anything without him in my life. Even if I never preach another sermon I can't live with God. It is not about preaching good sermons or impressing people with knowlegde, but when the crowd is gone I NEED God in my life.

There was a song that I think Shawnee wrote, called "Change Me, Lord." I really like that one. We do the chorus a lot as an altar song.

"Change me, Lord, I'm tired of who I am,
All my strength is gone, I need Yours to help me stand,
I don't want to give my life to You, then take it back again,
I just want to be like you, so change me, Lord.

My Dad taught me that one (Jesus, my hope....), along with "I Just Started Living!" LOL!!!! Now there's one we sang into the ground. I sang "I Just Started Living" at Kenneth Phillips' church with my older sister when I was 9 or 10 years old. I freaked out when the spotlight came my way and couldn't remember a single lyric, so my sister stood up from the choir loft and started singing with me...hehe. Then I was able to finish. She dressed me that day, too...in some silly little hat...I'm sure that added to my nervousness.

TRUE STORY:

Talking about 'old songs' has got my mind running like a sanctified whirlwind tonight... so I thought about something I just did at a funeral.

My daughter-in-law's Grandmother (a precious Saint) passed away a little over a year ago. She had been a faithful Saint for years until Alzheimers began to chew away at her memories.

She ended up in a nursing home and would seldom remember anybody. In her checkered mind her son (Jimmy) was three different people: Her husband, her married son and her infant baby. Alzheimers is so cruel at times.

Ironically, however, she always remembered me. She'd hold my hand and tell me about how much she loved me and my preaching (I can't believe I'm crying in the middle of the night at a stupid computer) but when I would turn the conversation towards God she would say, "Now, where does He live again?"

Even so, whenever we prayed she would talk in tongues and weep like a baby. She was, in every sense of the word, a precious Elder who was loved by all.

For her passing I prepared the eulogy and a funeral message but, when it came time to give the eulogy, I was overwhelmed and told the congregation through tears, "I could say so much. I could comfort you with words that would help us deal with the cruelty of this thing called Alzheimers but all that really needs to be said about [the Sister's name] and her 'condition' was said a long time ago in a song that takes on new meaning to me today."

And with that I simply started singing...

"I Shall Know Him
I Shall Know Him
As Redeemed By His Side I Shall Stand!
I Shall Know Him
I Shall Know Him
By The Prints Of The Nails In His Hands!"

God swept through that place like a river and the congregation stood to their feet and sang until our pain gave way to victory.

What a great God!

Oh, my goodness, Steadfast. Now I'm just sobbing. That's beautiful.

Oh, my goodness, Steadfast. Now I'm just sobbing. That's beautiful.

Yep... I seem to have something in my eyes, too... not sure 'Visine' will take care of it though.

Another 'crazy' thing that always happens when I leave a hospital room or nursing home with some of our precious elders is I generally weep all the way home singing...

"I have heard of a land on the far away strand,
’Tis a beautiful home of the soul;
Built by Jesus on high, where we never shall die,
’Tis a land where we never grow old.

Never grow old, never grow old,
In a land where we’ll never grow old;
Never grow old, never grow old,
In a land where we’ll never grow old.

When our work here is done and the life crown is won,
And our troubles and trials are o’er;
All our sorrow will end, and our voices will blend,
With the loved ones who’ve gone on before."

Got it!

Wink, it was "I Won't Have To Face The Storm Alone" ... and it wasn't the Trimbles who 'borrowed' it but Tim Spell.

What an incredible song... still makes me cry like a sow losing her piglets!

You wrote one of your songs on your way into my city one day. I can't remember which exact song it was now but it, too, was a great song.

I've only heard one sing this song. Our dear Pastor's wife here in the 90's.

IT'S WORTH IT ALL

WHEN WE ARE TRIED AND THINGS GO WRONG
WE SOMETIMES SAY "OH LORD HOW LONG?"
LET'S TRUST IN HIM AND WEAR A SMILE,
IT'S WORTH IT ALL TO BE HIS CHILD.

CHO:
I'S WORTH IT ALL TO BE HIS CHILD,
TO SERVE HIM THRU THE LAST LONG MILE,
IT'S WORTH IT ALL JUST TO FEEL HIS POWER
AND KNOW HE KEEPS US EVERY HOUR

ALTHOUGH WE BEAR REPROACH AND SHAME,
IT'S WORTH IT ALL FOR HIS DEAR NAME,
THE TIDES OF LIFE MAY RISE AND FALL BUT THE
LOVE OF GOD IS WORTH IT ALL

WHEN HERE ON EARTH OUR RACE IS RUN,
WE SEE THE RAY'S OF THE SETTING SUN,
WHEN WE SHALL HEAR THAT FINAL CALL,
WE'LL TELL THE WORLD IT WAS WORTH IT ALL.

I love these threads.. Steadfast, thank you so much.

"Peace In The Midst of the Storm" holds a special place in my heart.

My grandpa was slipping from this world to glory and we sang this as we stood around his bed and you could feel the peace in that room. And mind you - we have some awesome singers in my family!

Our family sang my Grandmother "Nonie's" favorite song as she drew her last breath - "Blessed Assurance"........ "This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior, all the day long......"

This holds a VERY special place in my heart!!!!

Another favorite oldie is "Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus" .... join me in the chorus........

"Jesus, Jesus, how I trust You. How I prove You o'er and o'er. Jesus, Jesus, Precious Jesus. Oh for grace to trust You more!!!"

It just don't get much better than that, folks.

You are so right! It just don't get any better! ANY Murrell Ewing song is one of my favorites! :nod I remember years ago putting his latest album on the record player and moving the arm aside so that it would play over and over again. (I sure do love the "repeat" button on my CD player, now. :toofunny) Anyway, I had a new convert that I had picked up that morning to spend the day with me so that I could help her with her newborn and small child. She'd been there since about 8 that morning ..... just before my husband came home, she said..."those are beautiful songs, but could we PLEASE listen to something else for a while?" :toofunny That record had been playing for probably 9 hours. :toofunny

Steadfast, your "story" about the saint with alzheimers really moved me. I sat here and was moved to tears.... I knew a lady who suffered with this terrrible disease. Like your saint, she couldn't remember people or places, but if you started to pray, she would join in and could pray beautiful prayers and commune with God in that heavenly language - when the prayer "meeting" was over, she reverted back to her state of confusion.... Makes me wonder why - but God doeth all things well - and we just have to trust Him.

This thread has been so special to me. As a child, I fell asleep under the pew hearing many of these old songs that have been listed. I won't even begin to name all them - but my heart is grieved when the worship leader will break out in one of these old songs and the praise singers have no clue as to the words or melody! Our pastor has been known to call someone in to his office to sing some of these older songs to the young man who sometimes leads worship so that he can learn them correctly. :nod

I will mention one song - and I've told DH that they can sing it at my funeral...

What a day that will be - when my Jesus I shall see
When I look upon His face - the one who saved me by His grace
When He takes me by the hand - and leads me to the Promised Land
What a day - glorious day that will be!

Thank you to each of you who shared - I have enjoyed this thread so much! God bless each of you!

It it amazing how the mere mention of a song can usher in the presence of God? I have teary eyes from reading this thread, remembering some great moves of God during different times of my life while listening to some of these songs mentioned.

A couple of years ago, I heard a newer rendition of "Had it Not Been". I sobbed like a baby as I listened to the words. I had heard that song many times, but maybe for the first time I really listened.

A few songs (some already mentioned) that always get to me when I hear them:

"I Can't Complain" by Don Johnson
"He's Been Faithful" by the Brooklyn Tab Choir
"Send a Holy Ghost Revival" by the Brooklyn Tab Choir
"In the Presence of Jahovah" by Geron Davis

I've been on the mountain with Jesus
I've been in the valley so low
But not one time has He failed me
When to Him with my burdens I go

Let me walk with you Jesus
Don't ever leave me alone
For without You I could never
No, never make Heaven my home

Lord you found me, when I was so lonely
You found me, when I was so blue
You found me, when no one could help me
And I didn't know just what to do

So me walk with You Jesus.
Don't ever leave me alone.
For without You, I could never
No never make Heaven my home.

I don't think I have seen it mentioned but one of my favorites is "I Can't Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand"

A similar song that holds greater meaning for me is Hallelujah Square. My dad and mom used to sing that sing often and it was always blessed. My dad was not a shouter... never saw him dance in the Spirit in my life... but he was a worshiper with a very large and very tender heart. He would start singing the verses to that song and the tears would begin to flow and the Holy Ghost would begin to move. Then, after he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, I remember one of the rare times I was in service with them (I was backslidden throughout my dad's sickness and didn't come back to God until 4 years after Dad's death) and in his frail condition with a black patch over the eye that cancer had taken Dad began to sing "I saw a blind man... tapping along..." and then moved into the chorus and began to sing "I'll see all my friends up in Hallelujah square.." and the hardened heart of this long term sinner just broke...

I believe a seed was planted that day that took four plus years to germinate and produced a result when the time was right.

So... I guess Hallelujah Square might be my favorite! :)

The song that has always blessed me is "There is a River". Some of the kiddies may not remember it... but, what blessings I've had while hearing that song. Now... don't get mad at me, but, hearing Jimmy Swaggart sing that "back in the day"... was about as close to heaven as you could get.

There is a River
1. There came a sound from Heaven like a rushing mighty wind,
It filled their hearts with singing, and gave them peace within.
The Prophet gave this promise, the Spirit will descend,
And from your inner being, a river with no end.
Chorus 1

There is a river that flows from deep within,
There is a fountain that frees the soul from sin.
Come to this water, there is a vast supply.
There is a river that never shall run dry.

2. There was a thirsty woman who was drawing from a well,
Her life was ruined and wasted, her soul was bound for hell.
Then she met the Master who told of her great sin,
And if you drink this water, you'll never thirst again.

Chorus 2

There is a river that flows from God above.
There is a fountain that's filled with His great love.
Come to this water, there is a vast supply.
There is a river that never shall run dry.
tag: There is a river that never shall run dry.

Another song that can be absolutely powerful if done right is, "All Hail The Power of Jesus Name". Seems too 'formal' for some but when a little 'heart' is put to it (and a little 'bluesy' feel) it's a great song!

I would have to say "Makes me wanna Shout" (Jason Breland) and "Thru the Fire" (Crabb Family) wow! Also, a song we sing at our church:
When I think of His goodness
and what He's done for me
when I think of His goodness
and how He set me free
I wanna leap, leap, leap leap leap all night
all night~
and it goes on....how ever the Spirit moves

I don't know the song title, but it goes something like this: I've got a longing. I'm homesick to go to a land with no heartaches, no sorrow, no woe. There is nothing but trouble in this world here belong. I'm homesick for heaven. I have a longing to go.

Even Lord quickly come.

"Through The Fire" is, indeed, a great song! It's one of those that I've never gotten tired of.

In the spirit of this thread and having the yearning to not let this thread die, I just listened to Nancy Grandquist on a song or several songs at Calvary Tabernacle. Very good! She is another one who has greatly contributed to the great music of the UPC imho. Anyway, here is the link if you are interested. Very moving.....you'll need a tissue, I promise!

the one I am talking about is the first one on this page.

2 of my favorites

Unfinished Task
Chorus:

For you have fought and run the race
You have kept the faith
These words I long to hear
My saviour say
So when my life, on earth is past
There’s just one thing dear Lord I as
Don’t let me leave behind
An unfinished task

Only one life
Chorus:

Only one life, so soon it will pass;
Only what’s done for Christ will last!
Only one chance to do His will;
So give to Jesus all your days.
It’s the only life that pays when
You recall you have but one life!

I've Made Up My Mind to Make it Through

I started out to follow Jesus many years ago
The road was sometimes slippery and my steps were often slow
I met opposition, I didn't quite know what to do
But I've made up my mind to make it through.

Before the first round started - I said I'll fight until I win
I might even get knocked down, but I'll get up again
I control this temple, and I can't afford to lose
I've made up my mind to make it through.

Years have come and they have gone, this battle has grown old
My mind's made up to win this fight, my faith has not grown cold
The joy of the Lord is still my strength, my confidence is true
My mind is still made up to make it through.

Stand by me Jesus, forgive me somehow
If there's any hope left- don't leave me now
I might be worth saving, I'm trying to be
Jesus, oh Jesus, Don't give up on me.

It's late, I know, and I've made you wait
But don't turn the light out, don't lock the gate
Forgiveness and patience, that's all I need
Jesus, oh Jesus, don't give up on me.

I can't remember the first verse..

When God Ran - PCD
Table of Grace - PCD
I Claim the Blood
He paid a debt He did not owe... I owed a debt I could not pay.

In Christ Alone is a favorite

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt of life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

I've had many songs minister to me over the years.

He is my peace (CLC)
I find my peace in you Lord are two that I heard at specific times when I really needed them.

WHEN HE SEES ME, HE SEES THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB

1. Looking Down Thru The Ages God Beheld A Dying Soul
Sin Has Brought Separation. Never More Could Man Be Whole
There Must Come A Lamb One Whose Blood Alone Redeems
Bringing Gifts From The Father For Our Soul Made Pure And Clean

Chorus
And When He Sees Me He Sees The Blood Of The Lamb
He Sees Me As Worthy And Not As I Am
He Views Me In Garments As White As The Snow
For The Lamb Of God Is Worthy And He Washed Me This I Know.

2. So He Left That Holy City Traveling On To The Cross
Thus To Bridge The Gulf To Glory And To Rescue The Lost
By His Blood He Entered Into The Throne Room Of Our God
And On The Mercy Seat He Placed It - Salvation For Us All.

Chorus
And When He Sees Me He Sees The Blood Of The Lamb
He Sees Me As Worthy And Not As I Am
He Views Me In Garments As White As The Snow
For The Lamb Of God Is Worthy And He Washed Me This I Know.

I used to sing that song when we evangelized back in the 1980's. The first time I heard it was when my roommate at JCM sang it for a chapel service. My roommate was Sis. Talmadge French.

A dear friend of mine passed away and we'd like to play it
at her funeral.....
