View Full Version : GREAT MEN: Who Do You Admire?

"Once upon a time there was a forum that sometimes gets a little carried away with questions, opinions and unfounded speculation about various ministries..."

Let's face it, there have been times when things have gotten carried away here towards the ministry. Thankfully, we've gotten much better in that area. I suspect a huge 'thank you' is in order to the Admins and posters for maintaining a higher level of dignity of late.

However, something came to me tonight as I preached for Bro. Ewing in Lake Charles: We DO have some men among us that are priceless and worthy of 'double honor'. Outside of my own Pastor there is no man more revered in my eyes than Bro. Murrell Ewing has become.

I now seem to preach for him on a fairly regular basis and cherish the touch of this great Bishop on my life. For a man like myself who has pretty much been a 'loner' most of my ministry it's refreshing to have someone in my life that I trust and respect like I do Bro. Ewing.

Instead of questioning the motives or critiqueing the styles of ministers let's turn this positive by taking the time to find someone who we think is worthy of honor.

QUESTION: Who is that ONE Minister (outside of your own Pastor) that you have great admiration for? And, in a few words, explain what there is about them that makes you honor them.

I wonder if we'll be able to see a lot about the individuals posting by getting a glimpse of who they admire in the Ministry... and why they admire them?

By the way, Bro. Phil Jones, I wondered if I might by chance see you again tonight in Lake Charles. Someday we're going to get a chance to meet and really fellowship a while!

Outside of my own pastor I really like Pastor Jeff Arnold from Florida. I've heard his older sermons, attended a few of them when he was here in Wisconsin, and he has grown a lot, he has toned down a lot. He's can make you laugh, but he can also make you think. He always gives his testimony, and he's very approachable. He will also stand for truth, name sin specifically, and even stand up to other preachers who have come to act as if they cannot be wrong. He's a cool preacher.

Ignited.

I too can think of many.
Clyde Haney
David Gray
Paul Price
Kenneth Haney
T.F. Tenney
Vaughn Morton

But the one preacher that really got in to my very spirit was J.T. Pugh. I've listened to him [in person and on tape] more than any other preacher. From my highschool graduation in 1963 until this present day. Not only were his messages deeply spiritual but his delivery is that of a poet. Non-pareil!

There are a few, but aside from my Pastors I have had, one that comes to mind is the late E.L. Holley.

He spoke a message and GC in 1985 that wasn't rowdy or loud but spoke volumes in his elderly souther voice.

I wish I was able to hear more of him.

Pastor Don Johnson, Memphis, Tennessee. He preaches the truth in love, and has worked hard in bringing people together.

Bro. Rayford Strange. A inspiring preacher whos wisdom has blessed us all.

And the late T. Grady Reece. A prophet who could say more with 10 words than most can say in a lifetime.

I hate to name names because there are so many however I am deeply thankful for men that are kind and down to earth...spitting in the mike, saying hard almost cruel things to get people's attention does not make a man a great preacher in my book.

I am impressed by men who are JESUS-like. men that serve and care for others not men that think they are on some higher level than others...

There are many pastors and preachers I deeply admire and respect and time would not permit for me to list them all here...
Brother Steve Pixler is a prince of a pastor and such a gentleman. I admire his love for young preachers and his vision for his city.
I admire Brother Ben Weeks and his kindness to our family everytime we are in his area.
I really like pastors that you don't feel like they like in some kind of make believe world. Pastors you can talk to and not feel they are doing you a favor by listening.

Sister Alvear
01-21-2008, 07:56 AM
I have a hard time no matter how "big" name the preacher is if all he wants to do is run other preachers down. Instead of being uplifted I feel depressed...I had just sat down with one and he begin to talk about where we had been and what he knew...I really felt sad that so many good things could have been said and all he said was bad things...

If you travel much you hear things like this, If you are there you cannot come here or next time you are home visit us and don't go there...lol...when are we ever going to grow up in Pentecost?

Pastors that have a problem with you visiting the church across town...pastors that want you to take sides in fights and disagreements you are not even involved in...

I enjoy being around poeple that don't care who we bless or who blesses us...I like that kind of spirit.

Are there people I don't care for? Of course but you can come to Brazil and preach for anybody and then come visit us we don't care. Who is your friend may not be our friend but we will not try to kill your friend or make you feel unconfortable at our home or churches because you might be a friend to someone that may not be our friend. My husband (Brother Raul Alvear) is one of the kindest persons you could ever met. If he speaks against someone then I know that person has problems because it is not his nature to speak evil of others.

None of the 'famous' ones hold any special rank to me. I'm sure there's many that've done good things in their own time and place, but I don't have any direct connections there.

David Beecham (he's technically my adoptive pastor though) and Fred Stanger are a couple good ones.

You should hear the old 'Sheeves for Christ records".

KP would preach a sermon on soul winning every year.

My mom has like 5 of them from 1970-1975 in that time period.

I would play them over and over again as a young child.

James Kilgore...

His great humility, unpretentiousness, Christ-likeness, love, mercy, and his compassion for the WHOLE WORLD while standing true without fear or compromise. He is as firm as steel but you would never know it with his clothing of velvet. He is as deep as Jacob's well and just as refreshing. His presence is a light, his words are as sweet as honey, his wisdom is greater than Solomon's, his sacrifice is seldom equaled.

Why do I admire him? If I could only count the ways.

Outside of my own pastors, Bible School teachers, peers and other men who I would regard as perhaps favorite 'preachers' I would have to list:

Rev. N.A. Urshan - former UPC Gen. Supt.
Rev. H.E. Scism - former UPC Gen. Foreign Missions Dir.
Rev. George Shalm - former UPC Asian Reg. Field Supervisor
Rev. R.A. Beesley - former Atlantic District UPC Dist. Supt.

I cite these men because they have impacted my life ministerially but also because we've worked with them and seen them up close and personal both or either here at home or in foreign countries.

Therefore :) ...... they are definitely worthy of the kind of honour and respect that I give them and I thank them for the impact they have had on my life. :thumbsup

Sis. Margaret Shalm - wonderful consecrated woman of prayer, missionary and a personal friend.

Sis. Bobby Wendell. Do I need to say why? :)

Good lists!

I would think that any list of great men who need to be admired should include C.M. Becton. He has one of the sweetest spirits I have ever meet. He made a deep impression on me by being so friendly and genuine in an encounter we had. He treated me as though we had known each other for some time even though it was our first meeting. He took his time to talk to me as if I were important even when I was not in any position to do anything for him and relatively, organizationally wise, a nobody.

There are a few, but aside from my Pastors I have had, one that comes to mind is the late E.L. Holley.

He spoke a message and GC in 1985 that wasn't rowdy or loud but spoke volumes in his elderly souther voice.

I wish I was able to hear more of him.

E.L. Holley great man. I have a Pentecostal Herald PDF file from Jan 1986 that talks about the 1985 GC in Ft. Worth Texas.

My brother met his wife at that Conference in Ft. Worth.

I remember his talking at the GC in 1985...

I went out to eat one night with Todd Hanby (he had a date), Myles Young (Who was with Jonny Godair's Daughter), I was with Tanya Raper from Mississippi. Bro Nathan Urshan, sis urshan and Bro Becton ate at the same place one night.. I did not remember Sis Becton.

They all walked by our table and Bro Urshan stopped to talk with us.

He commented now here is "Who's who in Pentecost".

He knew us all.

He acknowleged Todd, Myles and then got to me.

He reached out his hand, I stodd up and we hugged.

He asked how my mom was doing...

That was a fun night..

Bro Urshan had spoke at my dad's funeral in 1978...

We had a very interesting conversation that night at the table, Todd, Myles and myself.

My brother had gone out with Johnny Godair's daughter the night before..

Well that is one really old memory....

I have heard this name all of my life. I don't really remember his preaching, as I was only 5 years old. He was the minister who was preaching the sermon that brought my dad to an altar at Tennessee Campmeeting in Perryville TN many years ago--and he prayed with my Dad that night until he received the Holy Ghost. If not for that sermon, that led my Dad to the altar-- my life would not have been the same.

Tina, you should look around the internet, there are a number of his sermons availble. one has been mentioned here from a GC
"He has exalted his word above His Name"

It is a stand out.

I also remember a School of Missions service he preahed "If the Gospel be hid". If that wont make you want to find a person to bring to christ, you cant be moved.

I remember when we elected him "Pastor Emeritus". We couldnt find him anywhere when the service started. Eventually they found him hiding in one of the back offices! He had to be talked into even coming into the service!
He just kept saying "You good people need to find someone worthy of this honor".

I never knew of a preacher so reluctant to get up before his peers yet so covetted. All my life I heard him refered to as "A pastors, Pastor".

It has been around 20 years since he passed away and you still hear "Papa George used to say" any time you are around DeRidder, or anywhere one of his "boys" is.

An unknown to probably 98% of you on AFF... but the first Pastor my husband and I worked under. Bro. Gerald Perkins.

A kinder man I've never known personally. The only time I ever saw him riled was when he thought someone was hurting or leading one of his sheep astray.
He would go to the hospital to visit anyone in the community who was sick... whether they were a member of his church or not.
He was so longsuffering to his sheep that we often wondered if he were too soft!

He was not a great orator... he didn't have the deepest most profound sermons I had ever heard... but his messages were from the heart and from the Word.

He loved everyone.. whether he agreed with them or not and prayed for those he disagreed with.

He wasn't perfect by any means, but he was the best pastor you could have asked for. Because he loved us. He had a great sense of humor, I can still remember the way his shoulders would go up and down when he laughed.

He died of a heart attack at age 58... probably his love for Wendy's food had something to do with that.. but also he never stopped, from morning till night. And I know he basically worked himself to death for the Kingdom.

I don't know anyone who didn't like him... even when they didn't agree with him.
I miss him somedays... and look forward to seeing him again.

My favorite would be Tom Barnes...he was a man that knew God and heard from Him. YET he would take the time to talk to a nobody like me. :)

Harry Haygood...a very Christ like man of God. Had a shepherds heart. Went before his time.

Those still living.

James Kilgore...a very Christ like man. Strong in convictions gentle spirit.

TF Tenny...a man those knows the Word and has many one liners you just can't beat.

C. M. Becton...another gentle giant. Love to hear him play the piano as well.

Jason Scisoe...a man that understands spiritual things.

Merrill Ewing...a gentle giant of a man. Can preach and sing like no other.

Steve Willioughby...not ashamed to dance before the Lord. I love to watch him and Barbara worship.

Nona Freeman...a true woman of God. Real without pretentions.

Vesta Mangun...a firebrand, of prayer.

G. A. Mangun...oh to be able to sit and listen to him teach!

Anthony Mangun...the best of his Dad and Mom with his own flair.

Lee Stoneking...I love to hear him preach and he has a hunger for the supernatural things of God, as I do.

Billy Cole...another man that understands spiritual things.

J T Pugh...always preaches a mighty message. Easy to listen too.

Janice Sjostrand...has a deeper understanding of the Word than many give her credit for.

Thetus Tenny...a woman of prayer. I love to hear her testimonies of the miracles of God.

I am sure I have forgotten many I really love, but the memory isn't what it use to be.:)

He's suffered great loss in his life, and yet his ministry remains rich - possibly BECAUSE of his great loss.......but, of all the preachers who ever preached for us when I pastored, few made the impact on our congregation like this great man of God.

He's not afraid to be real, to confess his weaknesses to a man younger than him, and ask for prayer.......what an awesome man of God, in my opinion.

I enjoyed fellowship with and greatly admired George L. Glass, Sr. In my younger years I enjoyed baseball. It is a little known fact that he did too. In fact, he was a great fan of baseball. We used to talk about our sport. He was very knowledgeable. Above all, he was not only a great Christian but he also was the MASTER preacher.

He once said, "When I take the pulpit, sometimes I will search out a very young child...maybe 4 or 5 years old. I will then temper the level of my language with vocabulary and tempo as to be completely understood by that little child." It worked. He was able to drive home his points so forcefully; seldom do you forget what he preached.

Brother Glass was PCI before the merger.

Apprehended, were you active on NFCF? we had a thread about Papa George. Timlan started it with the theory that GLGSR was PCI in doctrine.

I took the other view, however at the end of the day, we came to the conclusion that no one really knows for sure!

Yes, GLG was PCI in organization, as was AT Morgan. Both are from First Church in DeRidder (my home church) and it was PCI in affiliation.

both Timlan and I spoke to GLGJR about Papa George on the subject. GLGJR told me he really didnt know where he stood. I know one of the last sermons he preached was in DeRidder and it was on the subject of the Holy Ghost and his point was that you needed it. My parents were there and remember it well.

I also know from GLGJR that when all the Glass preachers were together (there were at one point 6 or 7), Papa George would state, that he wished they could go to some part of the country that had never heard of Pentecost and "Do it right"

I think that is very telling. I am not saying he thought things were terribly wrong with the Apostolic movement, but he was certainly aquinted with most of the situations (if not all) where things had gone sour.

He spent months in Indy with brother Urshan during the "Later Rain" problems that took place there. Papa George preached for him when Bro. Urshan could not even take his own pulpit for weeks and weeks.

In no particular order

Robert Trapani
A man of wisdom and kindness that has been a long time friend of my mom and dad. He has spoken so much truth into my life. A true Prince among us.
George Glass Sr.
If you don’t know who this is, well, you need to find out. One of the greatest men of God ever. Period. His GC sermon “He has exalted his Word above His Name” should be a must listen to every preacher in Pentecost.
TF Tenney
Graduated from High School with my dad. I remember going to Youth Camp as a young kid and hiding from him until I “Got right with God”…. The man can simply look into your soul.
V. A. Guidroz
If ever there was a man who understood what it means to “do the right thing” it is V.A. Guidroz. He is my bishop and confidant and a man of great wisdom. Doing “it” right, has been his greatest lesson. (and if you think Thad can play a Hammond, you need to hear Sister Guidroz play!)
Tom Coppell
My youth pastor when I was a kid. TC meant more to me than he will ever know. Just a great guy.

need to add a couple.

Lloyd Shirley
Years ago while working as an AIMer, Brother Shirley showed me great kindness. He is an awesome guy!

Glen Chance
As wise a man as you will ever find. I love brother Chance!

I must say that despite likely opinions to the contrary, God used William Branham mightily as well. I totally despise his serpent seed doctrine and his elevation of self to the level of the seventh angel of Revelation, but he was genuinely used in the gifts of the Spirit. He should have remained that way and not attempted to teach. He was not a teacher. God did use the dude.

Hey, 'Dude' Caveness could be acid hard when preaching in the old days! But, having said that, I was just preaching in a venue that had him as one of the speakers and - honest before the Lord - the man is as incredible a preacher as you'll ever hear.

If you haven't heard him in the last several years you owe it to yourself to hear the man preach. Got to admit that (having known his reputation and 'braced' myself) the man left me in awe! What a preacher!

Back in the 70's and early 80's there used to be a lot of fellowship between
the UPC and Independent Churches in our area. My pastor was at a campmeeting that was held by an Independent group in our area during this
time (I believe early 80's). Dude Caveness was the preacher. He preached
a message titled "There Arose A Generation That Knew Not God". It was my
understanding that the UPC was identified in this sermon as That Generation.

Tom Copple!! Now that's a blast from the past! I would love to see him again after all these years! :)

We saw Tom and Sarah at the Azusa St. gathering year before last. They have beautiful kids!!! They took us out to eat and we had such a great time with them. Tom looks exactly the same - not a single gray hair (and Tony is ALL gray). We hadn't seen Tom since JCM days.

Tell him Renda from JCM said hi!

Here is a link to Sara's Myspace music page as well.

I tried explaining what proeslytes were, in Chapter 2, and he insisted otherwise.

Yes, you have it right.

After the merger, you would never hear br. Glass state a PCI position or would he state an exclusive PAJC case. He knew how to keep peace in the spirit of the merger. He was a class act in all things.

I know both Jr. and Jimmy too but I have never spoken to them about any of this. I think that their mother is still alive...I could be mistaken.

I also remember when he told about the days that Raymond G. Hoekstra resigned the church to promote Little David, leaving the church to his assistant N.A. Urshan. During that time the Latter Rain broke out, invading many Oneness churches, sweeping many of them away. Not long afterwards, Ray Hoekstra returned and wanted his church back. The problem was, he had gone nuts with the L.R. movement, even became shaky on the doctrine. Bro. Urshan called men like Br. Glass and br. Guidroz who helped him steady the ship.

In the end, since Hoekstra, who later became Chaplan Ray could not take the church back, he tried to split it. Bro. Urshan only lost one family.

Bro Glass was a strong steadying force in those days. I remember the story of how he was nominated to run as the first DS of La. Bro. S.L. Wise was also nominated. The vote tied on the first ballot. The vote tied on the second ballot. The vote time on the third ballot. Finally, bro. Glass deferred to br. Wise...a story which would touch your heart, he won the deep affections of the whole district from then on.

If there be a young minister that would like to "learn how to preach," I would certainly recommend that they get every tape of Br. Glass' preaching. The message that he preached at the 1957 Gen Conference in Little Rock which I attened was an all time classic, "The Lord Hath Need of it." I will never forget it.

The last message that I heard him preach shortly before his death was, "God Gives Every Man an Equal Chance." It was probably the finest message that the 80 something year old man ever preached with a voice as clear and strong as it ever was...even when he was a young, strong black headed man.

He baptized me. So, I have a natural affection for him in that regard.

That one service caused a rift between the UPC and Independents in our
area that was never repaired to this day. Many that used to fellowship were
now divided as a result of that service. Unfortunately, many Independent

Not trying to get into a fight but I heard the problem was a result of a UPC being unethical in solicticing members from other churches?

btw, I have it on good autority that GLGSR actually played minor league baseball and might have made the bigs but gave it up to preach!

He was a great fan of baseball, as I had earlier mentioned. I never heard him say that he actually played...he may have. I am aware that he had taken up boxing before he got saved. He was a very good fighter.

Right after he got saved, three men met him behind the brush arbor meeting after he had finished some of his earliest preaching. Those men announced to Geo that they were going to give him an old fashioned whoopin' which he had comming to him.

George consented to the whoopin' but asked if he could pray first. The men looked at each other in surprise but granted him the time to pray before they dished out what they thought he deserved. George knelt to pray as they watched.

He prayed, "God, you know that I could whip all three of these men at one time. But, you know that I am a man that can take all and more that they can dish out. It is my intentions to take the whipping in the Spirit of Christ that taught us to turn the other cheek. I will attempt to keep my flesh under control while I'm taking the whipping, but if for some reason I don't keep it under control, I am about to give these three fellows a beating that they will not soon forget. Amen."

EC Knott.... from North OKC... Many a time I would come over to the Church in the middle of the afternoon to Find Bro. Knott layed on his face on the floor in the aisle of the sanctuary weeping and calling on God...

Br. Randy - My husband was pastored by Br. Knott in OKC. He spoke very highly of him. He said he was a gentle man with a real love for people. He also admired Br. Bass, too.

The list of Apostolic Brethren I admire is almost impossible to go down!

But one of the women ministers that I was privileged to know, and wonder if any of you knew was very colourful to say the least!

Did any of you know Sister Teelie Dover Greer??? Wasn't she in a class all her own?

I remember the first time I met her at a conference, she was up with the rest of us missionaries, and we each were invited up tot he pulpit one by one to introduce ourselves to the conference. When I saw this elderly woman step up to the pulpit I was expecting this weak whispering voice to come out of her. BOY WAS I WRONG!!!!

But not only was she MORE than audible, the woman could not string four words together without taking of shouting ...."WELL GLORY!!!!!' and doing a little jig! By the time she was into her third minute of five I was besides myself and I completely lost it! you know the SHRIEKING laughter type spirit! it was terrible! But we became friends from that afternoon on.

She was out of Elder Williams there in Tulsa and knew EVERYBODY in Pentecost! Even Harry Morse! Incredible woman.

But the one preacher that really got in to my very spirit was J.T. Pugh. I've listened to him [in person and on tape] more than any other preacher. From my highschool graduation in 1963 until this present day. Not only were his messages deeply spiritual but his delivery is that of a poet. Non-pareil!

Raven
I agree. Bro Pugh makes you really pay attention and think. Sometimes he uses several scriptures and you are thinking "How will he ever tie all of these together" and then, boom!! He does it. I have a tape of his sermon "Wandering Stars of the night" from Jude. I've listened to it many many times. It still moves me. Bro T F Tenney is the same way. I have many of his tapes, all great.

Steadfast, I met Bro. Ewing as a young girl. Always thought he had a beautiful voice. He has, however, helped me more in the last couple of months than he can ever know. You see, we are going through a life-changing storm right now. Some days, my boat gets a little too full and I sit on the floor and cry. Then I listen to Bro. Ewing sing his song that says, "When the Master says enough, it just goes away..." That song, which so speaks to my situation right now, has helped me through many dark hours recently. Would you tell him thank you for me for recording that song?

Elder Paul Robinson had a love for lost souls that inspires me to this day.

Rev Rufus & Sis Pam Parker - These people loved on me. Pastor Parker was like a Dad to me. They taught me by example. They trusted me and I them. Sis Parker introduced me to Praise and Worship Music.

Bishop James Gilbert was so strong and so wise. For some reason, he took a strong liking to me and he trusted me. I love them both him and his wife, though Sis Gilbert and I had our share of run ins. Despite the mess, they loved and trusted wretched me.

Rev Michael Williams - I would be either on my way to hell or in hell if it was not for this man's preaching and influence in my life. I am not exaggerating. When I thought that I was hopelessly bound by the chains of an horrible addiction and sinful lifestyle, the Lord used him to preach deliverance to my soul. He loved me. He knew who I was by name. When I felt worthless, he made me feel important. His sermons were life changing, powerful. His sermons were always relevant.

Man, do I have some fond memories of my times w/ the UPCI!!!!

Small question here, does it have to be MEN that we admire? What if there is a WOMAN we admire?
Reason I am asking is I have been going through this in my head and I have a few men I could add but I also have a few women I admire also. Woman preacher or not there are women that have a presence and spirit about them that even male preachers could learn from. (if they would get off their high horse)

disclaimer: That is not aimed at anyone in particular just a comment about A LOT of the preachers I have seen and met in my day, not all mind you. They tend to feel there is nothing they can learn from other men let alone women.

Of course AFTER I posted I saw that. =)

lets see......

Jonathan Alvear is up on my list, now I have not heard him in over 20 years but he always had a great spirit about him.
Can not forget his father Juan Alvear
Anyone who knows my brother Tom better NEVER tell him I put him on my list. Although he was my pastor when I was younger he isn't any longer. I think I learned to appreciate him more as a bother and adviser more in recent years than before.
Elder Robert Cavaness (deceased) He was an awesome man of God. Compassionate and caring and a few steps ahead of his generation.
Albert Edwards, great friend. He showed me the power of true friendship and gave me an understanding of sacrifice.
George Pantages, his ministry and understanding of forgiveness goes beyond anything I have ever seen.
Of course I have left my current pastor off because you wanted to know about those other than our pastor. He is an awesome man though. Go Bro Romo. =)

Connie James: my big sissy, one of my best friends, adviser, teacher, and all around good gal. Always going to tell it like it is even if it hurts her and you. She never does anything out of the emotions of the moment. She has taught me temperence and patience. Also to trust in God for ALL things even when you feel like the world is coming to an end.
I must say she learned a lot of it from our mother so can not leave off Ethel Jacks. Love that women.
Sis Alvear, Jonathan's wife, that women has strength beyond belief. To survive what she has experienced in life you would have to be strong. I would have begged for death I am sure.
Sis Janice Alvear, a lady of the highest caliber. If only I were as willing to follow God where ever he leads like she has been willing to do.

Josh and Asleigh Barsotti, A young missionary couple that is willing to go any where that God wants the to go to see the world evangelized. Right now they are in India and next year they are headed back to Norway. God bless and keep them. May a few of us old folk be as willing to do as God wants as they are.

This will have to do for now.

=)

Oh one last person. My wife, she has shown me love, forgiveness, understanding, compassion, long suffering, meekness, and the list could go on forever.
Love you Gina, with all my heart.

In my younger days, I would say that I was influenced a lot by my dad (deceased), who was my Pastor.

I was greatly influenced by David Terrell, and most of the "healing evangelists" of the 50's, 60's, and 70's, as I either saw them, or read their books. I formed much of my beliefs in Gods ability and desire to heal by seeing him do so thereby confirming his word. My wife and I both received the Holy Ghost in a David Terrell tent meeting.

I took a turn in the early 90's after a youth Camp we took our kids to in Christenburg, VA that Bro Tom Peters was having. I met Pastor Jerry Cox of Franklinton, LA, and saw the Love of God permeating from him in a way that I had not seen before. Though he would likely not remember me, my contact with him changed my life. I can state that through the encounter with him, I found conservativism.

Pastor Tim Cormier also greatly influence my life. The man truly was what I would think of when I say the word Pastor. He was also a tremendous teacher. I think if I could pick any man as a Pastor today, it would be this man. When I broke away from him to "spread my wings" and attempt to fly, I did not do it right, and wish I could go back and redo it all. My heart weeps just thinking about it.

Bro RE Strange has been both a Father and a friend to me since we met on GNC many years back. I have learned Much from him, and love him dearly.

There are so many others that I could list. Elder's Alvear, McMullin, Bean, Ballestero (father and son).... The list goes on. I am a product of the men and women that God has placed around me over the course of my life. Some of the influences were for the good, some not. I have learned what TO DO, and what NOT TO DO. I have gained, and I have lost. I have learned to be abase, and abound. I am truly thankful for a God that would live me enough to take notice of this Jacob, and make me an Israel.

T.F. Tenney & Lee Stoneking have both said that they were preached to the altar or lead to GOD by women....just a thought for the hardliners out there.
Some men i admire- tf tenney anthony mangun Dr. gerald geffers ( was glad to see rhoni listed him) Rusty Riddick, Don Privett.
women I admire: thetus tenney cheryl Riddick ...I was close minded on this subject for a long time so Im sure there will be more I can list in the future

Wow! Okay let me think about this. Aside from my current and former pastors:
A. Mangun
Bishop N. Wagner
Bishop L. Gates
Lee Stoneking
T. Pickard
G. Blacksher
E.L. Davenport
J. Arnold
F. Odom
J. Godair
W. Huntley
and some who have passed on who had an impact upon my family such as Benjamin Urshan, N.A. Urshan, Kenneth Fields and a pastor I knew in Arlington, Texas (although I never knew his first name because we called him) Rev. Combs.

Very cliche I know, but I do sincerely admire my father, his ministry, his absolute dedication, his ability to be real, his consistency, and the fact that he walks the walk and is willing to put it all on the line for what he believes. There are many other men and women that I admire, but he has impacted me very greatly and has shaped me in ways that I am just starting to appreciate.

I also obviously admire my pastor...or I would not be in my church :)

A man of God I greatly admire is Br. Elton " Tony" Bernard. He left a successful career to answer the call to preach. He felt the call to Korea, a country he went to in a time of war. After much sacrifice, they were appointed to Korea where they served successfully for 20 years. They founded a church that is self sufficient today. After retiring from the mission field. They came to Gonzales, Louisiana to plant a church there. After growing a thriving church in that city, he stumbled on some Spanish men who were working in the states and began to witness to them. As a result he has a very successful Spanish ministry in the same town. He has proven his love for souls and devotion to his calling.

I have some questions about this resignation.
I know the history at the Calvary Tabernacle reflects Hoekstra made a "strong recommendation" to have NAU take over as pastor as does the book United We Stand.
Did Hoekstra feel he had officially resigned over Calvary Tabernacle when he left on tour with Little David?

It just seems odd that he made such a 180.

What is wrong specifically with the latter rain movement? Their emphasis on the gifts? What?

What is wrong specifically with the latter rain movement? Their emphasis on the gifts? What?

In short it (Latter Rain) became abusive in some areas, including the following:

The church began to be governed through the gifts of the Spirit, etc.

Prophetic Presbytery, meaning offices and positions in the church were given only if you went and had this type of ministry etc.

In an effort to recover some lost anointing, imbalance and abuse became rampant, so most Pastors wanted nothing to do with it.

It is my understanding that this started in Camp Meeting in Saskatchewan Canada in the 1940's.

I have a book by Ernest Gentile that explains this in detail.
