Gasoline,
It is a former UPC church pastored by Brett Jones now. The Elder Jones died recently.
Since they left THE ARK they have been blessed greatly with rapid church growth / revival.
Have you found their website yet? They have a nice one and have a link where you can access webcasts of their services.

No sarcasm at all. It is a great church. I have not had a chance to visit it since they left the UPC but visited them many years ago.
I have friends close to that church and they speak very highly of it.
Why did you think I was being sarcastic?

LOL!!! I many times refer to the UPC as "The Ark" based on a General Conference sermon I heard back when I was in Bible College. It was the late 1970's and either Kansas City or.....ah.....rats I forget the other place. Anyway a preacher preached a sermon where he likened the UPC to Noahs ark and the implication was that if you were not UPC you were not going to be saved. Even back then I found that pretty amazing and that was before I "went charismatic".

Just guard your heart and spirit against bitterness. Sometimes it is a hard transition as many find out that people they thought were friends suddenly treat them as strangers or worse.

Petrol, I have been in the transition for over a year myself. It ain't easy at times, but the truth is that as each day goes it gets easier. I do have great friends too. I hope I do not see what CC1 is talking about. I have seen in others lives, but not mine yet. I do know that there will come a day that my friends see that I am not coming back to the UPC and they might change their tune. But so far so good. Keep up the walking. As long as you are walking toward Him you will be taken care of.

its been about 6 months for me, its funny a girl I went to Bible School with was going through the same things as I was at the same time, we are both trying to be strong...not a lot of the people I went to school with know about this(I was done BC in 2003) and being a young minister I feel like there is no place to go but I have a great support system in the church I have been attending and feel as thought its the best place for me right now...

The UPC is also some times referred to as the Mother Ship.
And, some times the Scripture in Acts 27:31 is referenced and paraphrased as "Unless you stay in the Mother Ship you can't be saved."
When I think of that phrase I also think of a quote by the late Wynn T.Stairs. He had been a member of the PAJC and was the first foreign missionary director of the UPC after its formation in 1945. Bro. Stairs left the UPC in the 1970's and someone accused him of leaving the ship of salvation. He replied, "Ridiculous! We just left the toilet and went up on deck to get some fresh air."

Hello,
I am a member of Grace Church. I just moved here in feb of this year. I love this church. Its unlike anything Ive ever experienced. I've been in church my entire life and Ive never known the love that is shown at this church. The preached word is a life application style of preaching. The worship and music ministry is amazing. There are two campuses. I attend the Humble campus. The other is the midtown campus.

I would think that it would be pretty obvious that they believe the Bible. Just what is that question supposed to mean? Could it be that the question is ....
do they have UPC standards and do they believe those standards are Heaven or Hell issues...........Why can't we spiritually grow up and quit trying to make belief what you think it should be according to your interpretations or organization...........They believe and teach the Bible.....That's all that is needed to be known.....................

I've been a member of Grace Church of Humble for 5 years. I am 4th generation Apostolic and grew up very traditional. Studing the Bible brough about questions of things I took for granted and in Grace I have learned a lot about religion and a deeper relationship with God. I love my roots, and also love that what I do is because I want to please Him and not because I am afraid of being judged by someone else.

That was a little uncalled for. Asking what someone believes should still be important, even if he was wanting to see if they believed in standards, Acts 2:38, etc...

Well, let me help you.
This church has deep roots in Pentecost. It was initially started by Frank Jones who once sat on the Texas board. It is now pastored by his two sons, Brett and Scott. They were UPCI ministers also.
They pulled out of the UPC in 1998. They hold a PCI position, GP.
Today it is a growing, thriving and vibrant church that averages over 3400 people and has 4 services beginning on Saturday night and 3 services on Sunday.
Many on the ministers on staff also have deep ties to the UPC. One pastor is the son of Charles Colgrove, of Grand Rapids, MI, who was the only pastor from MI to pull out because of the Affirmation Statement in 1992. Chuck Jr. is married to Urshanna, grand daughter of Nathaniel Urshan.
Chuck's dad is retired and now also attending this church.
Worship is led by Hector Soto who has apostolic roots in E. Texas, I believe, and attended JCM. Scott and his wife, Melanie, also attended JCM.
Recently a couple of former UPC ministers have left the Michigan area to help as staff pastors - Roland Baker, and now the former youth president of the Michigan district, Robby Emery.
One more popular former UPCI minister of repute should be joining the Grace staff in the very near future.
GP, The baptism of the Holy Ghost is taught as a real salvational experience that is for empowerment of a repentant, born-again (regenerate) believer. This has been the mainstream Pentecostal view since Asuza.
Also, Houghton, has strong ties with this church and will be holding his Deeper conference there as he has done for the last several years.
Finally, Scott Jones now heads Global Network of Christian Ministries (global-ministries.com (http://www.global-ministries.com/)) an organization that fellowships both Oneness and Trinitarian ministers. It was started in the 1980's I believe by former UPC minister L.H. Hardwick. Scott assumed the reins as chairman when Jack Dehart, former UPC board member, fell ill with cancer. Many former UPCI ministers in 1992 and there after have flocked to Global.
Promiseland in Austin, by the way, GP is still very much a 3 step Water and Spirit church under Pastor Kenneth Phillips. I recommend you visit the Promiseland website and read their materials.

Sounds like a great church. How traditional is Grace Humble? Do they still try to get people to receive the Baptism of the Holy Ghost with tongues by laying on of hands at the altar like many Pentecostal churches or do they just encourage believers to seek after the gifts.?

Thanks for this information! That was very interesting and informative. I've looked at PL in Austin and I wasn't aware they are 3-step. I just wanted the info, so not to argue, but you said the the HG is taught (at Humble) as a "real salvational" experience. Salvational, but yet not a requirement for salvation? Do they teach people receive the Holy Ghost by evidence of tongues, or immediately after baptism?

You can access Promise Lands' guide for believers called the Enquirer's Handbook here:
http://www.promiselandchurch.net/content/view/146/152/
Also the PL church offers an outreach site that speaks of the 3 step Water and Spirit experience here: http://theexperience238.com/
As for Grace, I believe most there, at least the pastors, adhere to the mainstream Pentecostal doctrine of subsequence that teaches that the baptism of the Holy Ghost is subsequent to being born of the Spirit (from above) through faith/repentance (conversion), or what is termed as regeneration. It is a gift of the Holy Ghost for empowerment and edification accompanied by tongues for the believer because of salvation (Acts 1:8, 1 Corinthians 14:4). Hence, the term "real salvational" was used in my original statement. This was the soteriological and pneumatological position of turn of the century Apostolic Pentecostals also like Goss, Gurley, Yadon and others.
As for those that teach we are filled with the Holy Ghost after water baptism you might have to look at other non-Pentecostal groups.

Excellent! Thanks for the PL information.
So being "born of the Spirit" is not about the Spirit? Or is not about the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Do these churches find it permissible for saints that have not received the baptism of the HG to participate in ministry, or is the HG viewed (like Sherri's church) as the gift of empowerment for ministry, and a prerequisite to minister? I would love to hear a good discussion on these issues that is clear, concise and doesn't go to 200 pages long.
Excellent! Thanks for the PL information.

Here is a link to the website of another former UPC church that holds the so called "PCI" position regarding salvation. CC left the UPC I believe in the 1980's.You can explore the site and find docrtinal statements of what Christ Church believes;

What's this all about? Pastor Dan Scott has his ordination with the Anglican Mission in America
Is he related to the Scott's in Humble?

One more popular former UPCI minister of repute should be joining the Grace staff in the very near future.
Would that former minister be J.F. from West Monroe?

I would be surprised if Jeremy Foster went to a PCI church. I realize he has a heart for evangelism but when I visited West Monroe's youth service, slamplanet , they mentioned water baptism. They didn't specifically mention Acts 2:38 but it seemed like water baptism was important to them. It was at that moment that I realized I hadn't heard anyone mention water baptism like that at my own UPC church in years.
The church in West Monroe is a good church that is fairly moderate.

LOL!!! CC has great music but don't look there for shockamoo jammin black gospel music.
CC is a very reserved Spirit Filled church. Which is fine with me as I have had enough jukin and jivin to last more than a lifetime and didn't see it benefit anybody or even be biblical. It is Pentecostal tradition. No "shouting" in the New Testament church record.

?????????????????????
Why in the world would anyone think PCI is anti-baptism????
I cannot count the number of times I have heard ministers of the PCI theology state "baptism is a commandment and not a suggestion" !!!!!!

I agree. Still, when I went to that church I heard them mention baptism in a way that I realized my own church hadn't talked about in years.
I was just surprised at the way baptism was mentioned.
I believe baptism is a commandment as well.

Just read thru this thread. I had NO idea that Roland Baker had left the UPC. Maybe that would explain why my husband's letter from HQ was addressed to Bro. Baker! LOL
I'm not sure that JF will leave...

Even back then I found that pretty amazing and that was before I "went charismatic".
it was robert henson, who preached the sermon, Gods pentecostal Ark, the charasmatic rowboats and independent tugs are goin down but Gods upc ark is sailin thru, lol:ursofunny
Is the Jeremy Foster you are talking about the same one who is speaking at the ACN conference this week? Also, I thought I read somewhere that CW Colegrove helped LH Hardwick with the formation of Global Network.

Yes, I believe so about JF. He is connected with a lot of guys in the ACN. I'm not sure about Colegrove helping Hardwick. That would be for someone else to answer :)

I guess with all the good word on Grace Church, I am going to have to check them out. I am looking for a new church to go to, although I will only be able to go to one service a week, since I live off of Highway 6.
I have great memories of Brett and Scott at the Texas District Camp grounds. Fine upstanding young men "way back"!

I went to Grace Church Garden Oaks with my sister and brother in law on Sunday morning. Very low key. I am not used to that, but liked it.
The songs I had heard before so I was comfortable with that. The music leader really promoted worship. The band was GREAT! Could not really hear the praise and worship singers, they sung VERY quietly. Again, not what I am used to. You know how UPC church are. The louder the better! LOL!
Pastor Brett preached out of Psalms 51 and it was very good. My sister and brother in law are "go to church, leave right after" type of people, so I did not stay and visit or try to meet anyone. Although I did know a couple of people there.
I will be going back and I will be going to Grace Church Humble to check them out also. :thumbsup
Grace Church of Humble Praise team ROCKS! LOUD! The music thumps in your chest. Love it!!!

I realize this is an old thread but had to comment. My husband and I just recently joined Grace Church. Our background is not UPC - we were raised Apostolic under one of the greatest pastors in the Pentecostal movement, Bro. Murray E. Burr. That being said, and with all due respect for Bro. Burr, we love this church! We had been searching for so many years and the Jones' family along with the rest of the church have been so welcoming to our family. If you are anywhere near either location, I highly, highly recommend this church!

Wow! Now that must be culture shock to go from Murray E. Burr to Grace Church. LOL!!!
Glad you love the church. The Jone's are great people and doing a marvelous work in the Humble / Houston area.

LOL!!!!!!!! Thanks! I didn't see your post until this morning - hilarious! Yes, Bro. Burr was a great man and believed what he taught and I loved him dearly, but unfortunately his rules were almost impossible to abide by, leaving many filled with guilt that they weren't going to 'make it'. Grace still believes the same doctrine without the strict rules - at Grace, you are expected to use the brain and the conscience that God gave you and make the right choices for yourself and your family. If your choices aren't great, you pay the consequences. If people want to do the right thing, they will. A preacher pounding the pulpit about a split in your skirt......well, it's just not for me.
