Fred Thompson, who was a former senator from Tennessee, is thinking about joining the presidential race.
He would be an immediate frontrunner, as he would be the most Reagonesque of the Republican candidates. He is an actor on "Law & Order", and has the charisma to beat anything the Dems can put out there!
The problem is that he's close friends with John McClain. Sen. McClain is not doing well at all in the polls, so this may open the door for Fred to run. Believe me, the Democrats DON'T want Fred Thompson to put his hat in the ring!

The surprising Republican interest in hints by former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) that he is considering a run for President is evidence of the continuing conservative void in the Republican presidential field. Although long associated with the more liberal Howard Baker wing of the Tennessee GOP, actor-politician Thompson has a strong conservative voting record and is particularly alluring for social conservatives.

Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) was the Senate Watergate Committee's chief minority counsel in 1973 and 1974. In 1975 he wrote a Watergate memoir entitled "At That Point in Time." Thompson chaired the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, which held hearings in 1997 on the 1996 campaign finance controversies, from 1997 to 2001.
After Watergate, Thompson served as special counsel to former Tennessee governor Lamar Alexander and special counsel to both the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee. In his first foray into electoral politics, in 1994, he won the special election for former vice president Al Gore's Senate seat.
Thompson is also an actor, with roles in 18 feature films including "In the Line of Fire," "No Way Out," "Cape Fear," "The Hunt for Red October" and "Days of Thunder." He has also appeared in television movies and series including "Matlock" and "Roseanne." Thompson lives in Washington, D.C., and Nashville. After the death of his adult daughter in 2002, Thompson decided not to seek reelection.

Pianoman, I've been reading that he's being aligned as Rudy's VP.

I'd rather see a non "politician" for a change, somebody that can criticize both "parties"...I know he would not run but someone like Jerry Doyle (radio show, ex-actor and did try some politics). He is conservative but independent and seems objective about both parties

Maybe he can assure that Congressional Sessions will be wrapped up neatly in one hour, minus a few minutes for commercial breaks.

I'm aware of this. Many think that his conservative views would balance the more liberal views of Rudy. The luster is starting to diminish on Rudy with his marital problems, so that idea may fade away.

I must not be following the news channels, since I had not heard this. Sounds like a worthwhile candidate. It's going to be a long long time til Nov 2008.

I was thinking, this evening, that "normally" they don't put in a VP that is more polarizing than the Presidential candidate, therefore, Rudy wouldn't be the choice for VP anyway. Don't even think he'd want to do that.
Don't know, as yet, who I see in that position. I'd have to see how far Ron Paul and Newt get in this race. They are not polarizing and both are very intelligent.
I think that Newt has been killed for anything after the fiasco when he was Speaker of the House. All of that was ridiculous just like Tom DeLay. Nonetheless, the job the Democrats did on him is a done deal and they put him down.
I love Fred Thompson and he was a great senator from TN. He is very smart (lawyer) and very articulate (professional actor).
However reading between the lines a few years ago I had some reason to believe that there might be skeletons in his closet.
He is single (as far as I know he still is anyway) and was quite the celebrity bachelor while a Senator. I remember him dating Lorrie Morgan (country music singer) and a few other colorful characters. I don't know if there is a "bimbo" factor we don't know about or not from his dating life.
That is the only thing that I could see keeping him from being a very serious contendor for the Presidency if he set his mind to it.

Fred Thompson would be strong on anti-communist issue
Chad Groening
www.OneNewsNow.comMarch 15, 2007
An activist working to bring democracy to Communist China says former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson recognizes the threat posed by Beijing and would make an excellent anti-communist candidate for President. The former lawmaker has returned to a career in Hollywood with a recurring role on a television drama; but he is reportedly considering entering the 2008 presidential race.
D.J. McGuire, president of the China e-Lobby and a member of the China Support Network, has been strong supporter of Congressman Duncan Hunter since the California lawmaker announced his run for the GOP nomination. And Congressman Tom Tancredo is a strong anti-communist candidate, the activist notes.
However, McGuire says Fred Thompson is a Republican who actually sponsored an amendment dealing with China being approved for Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR), "which would have suspended PNTR at any time, if the communists were found proliferating weapons to terrorists or various other rogue regimes," the China e-Lobby spokesman observes.
Even though the amendment failed, McGuire observes, "it was a very, very good amendment, and it was a sign of a senator that was very knowledgeable about the situation and determined to try to do something about it."
And Thompson has one huge advantage over both Hunter and Tancredo, the anti-communist activist points out. He says the Republican ex-legislator "does have more name recognition than either Hunter or Tancredo at this point; and there is the fact that he could get some support and may be able to challenge Giuliani, who is basically the overwhelming front-runner right now."
McGuire is impressed with Thompson's record with regard to dealing with the China threat, noting that the former lawmaker "is a guy who, frankly, has grown into a good anti-communist" and who presented "the strongest amendment to Permanent Normal Trade Relations back in 2000." And, the China e-Lobby president adds, he believes Thompson could beat Senator Hillary Clinton in a general election.
