The bizarre ritual of throwing newborn babies off a temple 50ft high and catching them in a cloth sheet has been observed in India.

Devotees at a Muslim shrine in western India's Maharashtra state believe the act makes children stronger.

It is practised by couples who are blessed with a child after taking a vow at the Baba Sheikh Umar Saheb 'Dargah' (the Muslim place of worship) in the Musti village of Solapur.

I saw that on the news earlier. They are claiming 50 years with no babies ever being hurt. Where's the outrage? Remember how made people got with Michael Jackson over just dangling his baby over the railing of that hotel room?

I can't imagine no damange is done...particularly internally. We hear all the time of babies being shaken violently and being damaged from it. I don't care what they land on...it's an abrupt landing.

I was reading about that earlier, those people are nuts! At the moment I have a few I would consider throwing though, but they're not babies!(Kids have hearing problems or something!)

I would have to change cultures. My husband loves to toss our babies around, but not until their necks are strong. I can't imagine their necks would be strong enough for 50ft. Thank God they haven't had any injuries in 50 yrs. I still wouldn't be able to take the chance. It sounds so cruel.

It was not 50 feet... but us young people used to do this to each other... 10 people place one in the center of a blanket and get momentum, then rapidly tug backward, tossed the one in the center 20 - 25 feet in the air!

Yeah, my kids did that I think. But not when they were babies. I have seen a lot of dad's that throw their babies in the air and catch them. Scares me every time.

I saw this on the news tonight and it was alarming.

I'd say the babies were 6-8 months old maybe.

When they hit the sheet they would bounce back up and a guy caught them on that bounce.

Scary.
