Want to make some super-easy, cheap hot fudge sauce for on ice cream?
Take a can of Hershey's chocolate syrup (the generic stuff works fine), dump it in a saucepan. Add about 1 1/2 cups of sugar and about 3 T of margarine or butter. Cook over medium heat till it boils then boil it for about 3-5 minutes or just till it begins to thicken a little. Don't boil too long or it will get thick like tar. Add 1 t. vanilla and serve over ice cream. Yum Yum!!
Or - here's a GREAT thing to do with it for you coffee lovers!
Take about 2 T of it and put it in your coffee cup. Pour in coffee (not quit to the top). I like Hazelnut flavored for this. Then top off with a squirt of whipped cream. COFFEE DESSERT!!

It's interesting to find this thread on here today. I spent about 10 minutes at Kroger's today checking out a homemade ice cream maker. I'm still considering buying one. My kids have never ever tasted homemade ice cream, so I think that would be fun.
Thanks for bringing it to the front like this, Esther. Now I know I have to go and get it!

I know! Isn't that the saddest thing you've ever heard??
I'm seriously thinking that I have to go and buy that ice cream maker. It occured to me today that I am on the way to sending my baby off to college and I've never given him homemade ice cream! What kind of a mom is that???
Yep, that's got to change!

Margie I think that is UnAmerican not to ever had homemade ice cream!
Just be glad you don't have to hand crank it like we did in the old days. My hinny nearly froze off more than once having to sit on the churn while my Dad cranked it!
But oh talk about good!

Fresh Rasberry Topping (great on vanilla ice cream with hot fudge sauce also)
1 cup fresh raspberries
1/4 cup sugar (use more or less as desired)
Gently crush fresh rasberries--add sugar--let sit awhile till berries "wheep".
Fabulous sauce!
Vanilla bean and Plain Chocolate M&Ms
Simple bliss.

We had a hand crank we were kids as well. But my parents made US crank it! At least until it got to be so frozen that we couldn't do it anymore. Then dad would take over.
We would go to my grandma's house on a Sunday afternoon in the winter. They would send us kids outside to get big huge bowls of clean snow. Why it had to be clean I never figured out since they were just gonna mix that rock salt into it. Ewww. Anyhow, Dad and Mom would start the ice cream freezing. And Grandma would pop popcorn in her big iron skillet. Shes the only person I ever knew who used a cast iron skillet for making popcorn, but she did! And she'd always leave the lid off until at least some of it had already started to pop. We'd wait just to see if it would pop out of the pan before she would put the lid on.
So then we'd have popcorn, homemade ice cream and sometimes Grandma would cut up some apples. And we'd all sit at her big kitchen table and play card games. Grandma LOVED to play Pepper, so we played alot of that. In later years, she liked UNO, so when I grew up we'd play that with her.
Those were some fun times!

I have two of the newer version homemade ice cream makers. They take 20 to 30 minutes and the end result is more soft serve . But it is soooo good. You can put in freezer for more traditional results. On is Rival the other is Deni.
If you make it, it won't have all the chemicals, plus you can control the amount of sugar etc.

As an FYI, the only choclate syrup I have found WITHOUT high fructose corn syrup is Nestles. Nestle Nesquik Chocolate Syrup
In case you are a fellow nut case and read all the ingredients labels at the grocery store. :gaga

Milk, a good vanilla, Eagle Brand milk (if you like the taste of Blue Bell's homemade), eggs, sugar.
Depending on the flavor you want for anything else.

Great! those are all staple items in my home :) so I'll be ready to go as soon as I pick up the ice cream freezer.
We have a fellowship potluck tonight at church. I should go and buy the freezer this afternoon and then make a couple of gallons to take to the potluck. I'll bet the kids would love it. hmmmmmmmmmmm

Had some coffee syrup once that made an awesome ice cream topping. Actually, I think it was called espresso syrup. Not sure. Can never find it in stores, but I saw it online somewhere, once. (Just a sec.....) Yeah, here's some: http://www.coffee-roasters.com/torani-Coffee.htm Not the brand we had, but probably just as good.

Butter Pecan Ice Cream
4 tablespoons butter
1 cup coarsely chopped pecans
2 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup water
4 eggs
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups half-and-half
2 cup whipping cream
In a small skillet, melt butter. Add pecans. Stir over low heat until pecans are golden brown but not burned; set aside. In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar and wter. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to a boil. Stirring occasionally, simmer gently 2 minutes; set aside. In a medium bowl, beat eggs until thick and lemon colored, about 5 minutes. Beating constantly, immediately pour hot brown sugar syrup in a thin stream over beaten egg yolks. Continue beating until cool and thick; set aside. Stir in vanilla, half-and-half, whipping cream and toasted pecans. Pour into ice cream canister. Freeze in ice cream freezer according to manufacturer’s directions. Makes about 4 quarts.
This one is really good. :)
