LOL - - and I suppose you look at all sides of a subject? :ursofunny
I realize this bailout is another big step toward socialism (we're already quite a way down that slippery slope) but I'm not smart enough to come up with an alternate plan. I don't understand a lot of this stuff but it seems that many of the "experts" think we have to do something, even if it is this distasteful. I think we feel "trapped" into going along with this package whether we agree with it or not. At least (if I understand this correctly) the Republicans did get a big gift to acorn (a phony organization to produce "votes" for the Daley Chicago machine) removed from it. None of us know how much other graft, corruption, giveaways, etc. are included in this thing for the "friends" and pac (payoff and corruption) buddies of the Senators and Representatives.

I agree Sam. This whole deal isn't enjoyable and it's a sad day in this country, but what else is anyone proposing?
When sound companies like Caterpillar and McDonalds are having trouble finding capital in the credit market, it's serious. It's not like this is as easy as telling Wall Street to take a hike and let come what may. That would be a great solution and I hope the bill nails the greedy CEO's and risk takers, but you can't allow credit markets to freeze and bring down the decent companies as well.

Light, before you nail me to this, how about you do a search for my posts on the subject?
I have stated repeatedly that the Paulson plan (GWB's plan) was BAAAAD.
I believe my plan was to get
Newt Gingrich, Paul Volker, and the ghost of Milton Freedman in a room and let them come up with a plan....
And anyone who has been around here and seen me post on the subject knows that Uncle Ronnie (with hand over heart) is my favorite president.
Although I will admit that GWB was a better option than either Gore or Kerry....
I will admit to that... I believed it then and I think I will stick with that acessment now!

This sounds good to me....
Hi Pals, I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.
Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.
To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.
Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up.
So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.00.
My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.
Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.
Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.
But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife has $595,000.00.
What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?
Pay off your mortgage? Housing crisis solved.
Repay college loans? What a great boost to new grads.
Put away money for college?Save in a bank create money to loan to entrepreneurs.
Buy a new car, create jobs, invest in the market capital drives growth.
Pay for your parent's medical insurance? Health care improves.
Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean or else.
Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.
If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( 'vote buy') economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President.
If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!
As for AIG liquidate it.
Sell off its parts.
Let American General go back to being American General.
Sell off the real estate.
Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.
Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't.
How do you spell Economic Boom?
I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC .
And remember, The Birk plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.
Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest.
Kindest personal regards,
Birk

So let me speak on this right now....
Obama would have been in support of the plan that Barny Frank and Chris Dodd came up with that included putting Union members on a board to regulate how the 700 billion dollars was spent and would have given billions to ACORN a community organizing group that Obama worked with that has been pegged for voter fraud about a half dozen times or more.
This bill strips that out junk out. So I am with Mccain on that.
This bill cuts the amount of funding to 250 billion first, with another 100 Billon later, and any more for purchasing of assets would require additional congressional action.
It also creates a framework for an insurance plan that Wall Street will have to pay for themselves. So this plan is about have the wrong headed plan that GWB asked for, is even better than the terms the democrats wanted.
It is still NOT a freemarket plan that requires the banks that got us into this mess to pay for getting us out of this mess, but is a lot better than the alternatives. a
ALSO as Pete Sessions said today, NOT doing this plan, would end with the democrats passing their plan which would have been far worse.
so in the end we get a compromise bill with some freemarket solutions and some taxpayer protections instead of a bill that would have been pure socialist take over of the financial markets.
Good guys: Jeb Hinserling and a host of republicans in the House, supported by John McCain.
Bad guys: some Senate Republicans, George Bush, Henry Paulson, and ALL of the democrats including Barak Obama.
This sounds good to me....

You are an intelligent man and you know that. I'm scared. We are becoming another Sodom and Gomorrah. I realize it's not all the Democrats fault but their agenda scares me. If I vote for them I am agreeing with them. I am not against the war although I don't like war. I'd rather we fight the enemy there rather than here. The Bible says in the last days there will be wars and rumors of wars and I believe we are living in those days. We have lost over four thousand American troops in this war and that is bad but they died for something they believe in. At the same time there has been approximately 300,000 people killed on our highways. Plus 240,000 murders since 2002. That's approximately 540,000 people who have died without a cause.

They were not espousing communist views, they were simply democrats that love this country as much as you or any of the other name callers. There are as many democrat as republicans that have bled and died for this country. Herein lies the difficulty: While you old-school Democrats weren't looking, the communists sneaked in and took over your party. What used to be fringe is now mainstream and setting the agenda. I understand, I truly do understand, the temptation to stick one's head in the sand and dream of yesteryear.
Whether average blue-collar Joe Democrat realizes it or not, he is now supporting a party that is pressing hard for many communist initiatives. The Communist Party USA supports Obama for President, for crying out loud.
So, while I understand that there is a continuum of Democratic thought, from hardcore leftist activist to nostalgic dupe, when somebody who is a Democrat for perhaps only one or two issues begins to cite party talking points, they start to sound an awful lot like a communist, or at least a communist sympathizer.
If a person says they against the war the right wingers on this board say you are not patriotic, that you want terrorist to come in and kill people, that is simply stupidity. The war is definitely a sticky issue. Its politicization and the associated name-calling are uncalled for.
You call them baby killers yet your do nothing republicans refuse to try to overturn Roe V Wade. This is incorrect. Several state legislatures tried to re-ban abortion after the Roberts and Alito confirmations, in an effort to do just that. There have been quite a few smaller milestones of pro-life progress. Hopefully you aren't surprised that they did not receive a lot of publicity. Republicans have been chipping away at this quietly, one piece at a time. It isn't going to happen in a large dramatic event, not yet, because not all Republicans are pro-life.

They were not espousing communist views, they were simply democrats that love this country as much as you or any of the other name callers. There are as many democrat as republicans that have bled and died for this country. If a person says they against the war the right wingers on this board say you are not patriotic, that you want terrorist to come in and kill people, that is simply stupidity. You call them baby killers yet your do nothing republicans refuse to try to overturn Roe V Wade. John McCain and Obama are the same as all politicians, liars.

"Do nothing" Republicans?
What more do you want Republicans to do? A Republican Congress/Senate can not overturn Roe v Wade. Period. Only the Supreme Court can. The only way for Republicans to ever overturn Roe is to have a Republican president who appoints conservative judges to the Supreme Court. That is ALL "the Republicans" can do. Reagan, Bush 1, and Bush 2 all did what they could in that regard.
Sometimes, the appointees (like O'Connor/Souter) have acted less conservative on the court AFTER they got appointed to the Supreme Court than was expected when they were chosen. But you cant blame the President who appointed them. All the President can do is do the research, appoint the person in good faith, and then we see how they vote.
However, if abortion is ever to be overturned or severely restricted, it is only going to happen by way of conservative judges, and of course the only people who will appoint such judges are Republicans.

I'm not quite sure what Light's problem is, and I've never met him, but judging from his posts, he's a very angry, bitter, sarcastic and judgmental person.
If Sis. Alvear knows him to be different, I would not argue with her, but if he truly is different in real life than he is on here, he would be one of the few who could elude the "from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh" principle.
My guess is that he feels cheated somewhere along the way, maybe he's questioning his own beliefs, maybe feels like he's been holding on to the wrong thing. That's usually the root cause for an acidic attitude like this, in my experience.

Ferd here is another time I agree with you. I am against the bail out. I know Obama is for it so what is new? What I am saying the Republicans that all of you on this site are so proud to vote for are not what you thought they were and what I always knew they were. They only pretend to be conservative.
By the way if you knew me personally you would find I'm probably as conservative as you.
I don't know if you remember but you tried to get me to tell you where I stood four years ago and I simply did not answer. Well here goes.
Ferd I am a yellow dog democrat that is against abortion I believe that homosexual are devil possessed not born that way. I am against welfare for every one except for a stop gap period of time. Unlike republicans I am against all corporate welfare. There are some programs on the democratic platform that I am for and some that I am not for. I have voted republican but soon came to regret it.

This is something I've noticed around here that just kills me...
Certain folks will come on here acting rudely and insultingly toward their fellow AFF members, but then there's always someone who comes around telling us that "he's really a nice person, if you only knew him like I do. That's not his real personality. Dont judge him too harshly. He's a sweetheart".
Well, I can only judge by a person by the words and attitudes they display . Personally, If I see a person repeatedly being obnoxious, uncouth, and boorish here on AFF, I'm going to assume that's the kind of person they are, until they show us otherwise.

Okay, I was kind of hoping that it was TIC...unfortunately there are some who would say that and it not be TIC. I was just wanting to be sure before I went off :)

The war is definitely a sticky issue. Its politicization and the associated name-calling are uncalled for.

I agree with that.
If Obama wins, I'll accept that perhaps it was simply God's will. Even in the Bible we see where the Lord put godless kings in power, as part of his larger plan.
I expect that Obama, if he wins, will be a terrible president, but maybe it's the Lord's will for us to have a bad president, one who could end up dragging America (and the world?) deeper into the pit.
America is overdue for the judgment of God to fall. If this is all a part of God preparing judgment (and/or revival) for America, then so be it.

You are wrong, the bill did not pass because conservatives called and emailed their representatives and told them if the voted for it the would throw them out in November. It shut down the phone lines and the website.

Or are you just going to mope about and watch our freedoms slip away one by one like the rest of us?
It doesn't have to be so bleak. There is one truly hope-inspiring change agent in the mix: Governor Sarah Palin.
The trick is to get her into office before she's corrupted . . . . :hmmm
Realistically, it is too much to expect a happy ending. We have had too much government intervention in social and economic engines, for too long, to be able to simply stop. We are going to become a failed state, and the best that we can hope for is that we don't get nuked, and don't take as long to dig out as the Russians have.
When an economic crisis like this happens to a third world country they're told to privatize everything, remove all tariffs, stop public spending and devalue their currencies. We're busy trying to hand off $700,000,000,000 to one or two appointed officials, with BILLIONS of pork and earmarks stuffed into this supposedly emergency, stop-the-doomsday-countdown, RESCUE bill . . . :vomit
This is a manufactured crisis, with a bunch of politicization, posturing, and election-year grandstanding.
Haven't we just approved a $700 billion defense budget for the year?
