I buy my food at Super Walmart and Kroger. No growing for me!! I wouldn't have a clue how to do that.

How 'bout this "short list" of home grown veggies?

carrots
onions
corn
radishes
lettuce
cabbage
peas
tomatoes
beets
cucumbers
potatoes

And even more that I can't recall right now? Absolutely nothing in them tin cans from Krogers can match the mouth-watering taste of these!

Matter of fact! This reminds me..... its time to drag out the old roto-tiller and get that plot ready once again. Raisin' one's own veggies ain't hard... just a little work every couple of days hoeing, weeding, etc.. and, oh yes! Lots of patience and prayer helps tremendously. Sort of like planting the "seed" of the Word of God..... we plant it, and maintain care to see that it is properly cared for, and then God does the rest.

Ron,
It costs more to water a huge garden than to buy the vegetables. We only grow tomatoes and peppers.

That might be true when one gets their water via municipal water systems. As for me, I have 2 wells....1 for the house and 1 for my lawn sprinkler system and the garden. The only costs involved is the electricity. And.... the difference in the taste between canned vegatables and home-grown cannot, for me, cannot be equated to a cost factor.

Oh yea! I know.... but it cost a lot of money to have a well drilled, right? That's only partly true, because after 24 years it is still working just as it was the very first day. And I sorta figured it has paid for itself by now!

All this is thinking about home-grown veggies is making me impatient for some of them home-grown potatoes, green beans and corn bread!

We plant tomatoes, peppers and sometimes cucumbers.

Any other fresh veggies come from someone else's hard labor. :D A man at our church has multiple produce stands-- and they plant "truck patches" of veggies. We get great deals from him... and put up the veggies ourselves.
It sure beats having to slave all summer fighting grass with a hoe in the garden. :D

We've had many big gardens with my FIL. I got to put in a big investment of sweat equity. But it was worth it come harvest time. We also have canned many a quart. And made pickels.

My garden spot, last year, was in a low spot and got too much water. I just had a small plot. We are planning on putting in a garden this year.

If you are planning of storing up for "hard times" you'd be better off buying up enough rice, flour, and dried beans to hold you over until a good garden harvest would be ready. And nope I don't have any stored up, but with hurricane season coming we probably will.

I have been thinking about growing some banana peppers this year. Because of where I live I would have to do it in a 5 gallon bucket, but I love the taste of those sweet banana peppers. Yummmy!

Loofa
I am mentally running over the garden and I can remember what else is in there at the moment.

We also planted..
An apple tree
A Valencia Orange tree
A Nectarine tree

Have you priced veggies lately?

Also... I know what went into it.
I know what was sprayed on it (Nothing)
My land is not devoid of any minerals so the veggies are better for you.
And there ain't no satisfaction like walking out to the garden and picking something.... walking right in the house... and cooking it up.

And this year... I have only watered my garden twice other than the first 2 weeks when they were getting started. We have had great rainfall this year.

When it is raining outside I will tell the kids... "No sense in praying....Jesus is outside watering my garden right now"

Of course it sleeted the other day... I told the kids..."No sense in praying... Jesus is outside beating my garden to a pulp" :killinme

But...we fared well... the sleet didn't do us much harm.

its time to drag out the old roto-tiller and get that plot ready once again.

I borrowed a guys tiller to till the garden this year. It was a nice self propelled rear tine tiller but it didn't dig down near far enough for me.

A friend told me that you will never get down deep with a rear tine till so I was on the look out for a used front tine tiller.

I bought one off ebay for $95.

It is a 1973 model Snapper tiller that was owned by a rental place so they kept it up nice and kept the oil changed etc.

It is one sweet machine.

A friend of mine has all the attachments too so I will be able to replace the times with tires and mount a middle buster on it etc.

I had one row that just didn't take this year so I was going to till it up with my new tiller before replanting. ( I use a wide row gardening technique... 4' wd rows)

That 34 year old tiller dug down deep and I am looking forward to tilling my other rows.

I planted more purple hull peas in the row and they came up great and I need to get some okra down too.

It is late to be doing it but okra will put out until the frost so it will still make good okra for us.

ok, I have a question..

my herbs are growing like mad. I planted them in a pot and lost my rosemary b/c the oregano took over and choked it out..

I used miracle grow organic soil and now I have enough basil in one pot, oregano in another and chives to choke a small country

what in the world do I do with it all??? Now that I have the basil and oregano, how do I, well - what do I do?

my lettuce looks like it's on steriods - my whole garden area was planted in that miracle grow soil for veggies - my peppers are HUGE - not quite ready to pick, but HUGE already....

There's lots of info out there on storing herbs. Here is a google search (http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=how+to+preserve+herbs&btnG=Google+Search)

No hope for saving lettuce. :)

Thank you, that answered my questions..

I also stumbled on the how to to make your own sun dried tomatoes...which sounds easy enough :)

I love sun dried tomatoes and seeing as how I'm going to have a TON of several different kinds, I'm going to try the process on them all to see which has the best results LOL

Yeah if we have enough that we are able to can what we want and still do some sun dried tomatoes then that will be great. I will have to look that up.

I would like to put up 80-100 quarts. Hopefully.

And then some pints of "Rotel" type tomatoes.
