Because it solved the problem of a portion in the middle that didn't get cooked and would often remain raw.
The hole allow the whole donut to be cooked more evenly and requires less time.

It was thought they were the invention of sea captains who would put them on the ships wheel during rough seas.
It also allows the cake to cook completely.
And everyone does it now....

So I can buy a dozen holes and think I'm not eating that much!
Or maybe it's so you can eat a dozen or so of the "donut holes" and feel like you haven't eaten as many calories as you'd have eaten if you'd had that whole donut.
:D

So you like cake donuts - that's what we call the non-yeast ones.Uh huh. Sugared donuts - with a little lemon rind and a pinch of nutmeg. Those two ingredients are crucial in order for them to be good.
Those kind of donuts are my husband's favorite and we had ladies back home where we pastored who made them for him often. He misses that because they're one thing I've never learned to make.

Dunkin Donuts - not sure what others I've eaten, it's been so long!
My grandma used to work at a donut shop when I was a teen. She brought home large grocery bags full of donuts each evening. We'd eat a lot & freeze the rest for later. And of course, I'd get free fresh donuts every time I walked into the shop. I also used to sit & watch the donuts being made. That was fun! GREAT MEMORIES! (Ironically, I had a dream about my grandma last night for the 1st time in a couple of years - she's been gone since 1989... I sure miss her! ---- Renda, this would be my uncle's mom... Had you ever met her?)

Do we like different tastes or do we actually taste them differently.

I just don't understand how he can not like it if he tastes the same thing I taste.

It does make you wonder doesn't it? My taste buds may be more sensitive to sour and your more sensitive to sweet, so it would make the food taste completely different to us.
I've also thought of that with color - do we all see the same thing? I guess we already know some don't since there are folks that are color blind.

Well my wife would certainly agree with you...
She is constantly saying... what color is that... I'll answer with what color I think it is and the inevitable response is... no it's not. :)
But with my eyes like they are I don't contradict her.... she is bound to be the one that is right on the subject of colors.

We were raised dirt poor and couldn't afford luxuries like boughten donuts. My mom used to take the bread dough that she had mixed up, roll it out flat, cut it in about 2" wide strips and then deep fry it in lard. After they were cooked we could shake them up in a paper lunch bag with powdered sugar if we wanted. Now THAT is a great donut!!! KK, Dunkin Donuts, Tim Horton's - none of them can come close. You'll just hafta trust me on this one.

I've often wondered if it was the lard that made the difference. Nobody cooks with lard anymore - at least not anybody that I know of. And our lard was never bought at the store. We rendered it out when we butchered hogs. We always had these big Cain's Potato Chip cans full of lard out in our utility room. You would think I'd have cholesteral thru the ceiling, but I don't. In fact, my good cholesterol is almost double what they aim for and my bad cholesterol is less than half.

Hmm, could be. I don't cook with lard. Infact, I don't ever fry anything except for eggs now and then, and I use a small amount of butter for that. My mom was one of those that used bacon grease to cook... she'd save it and many did back then because when she grew up, they were very poor. You do what ya gotta do.

I will never forget one time when my daughter was around 3, I had left her with my Mom while I was working an evening shift. I got done work around 10pm, and went to pick her up. It was snowing really really hard. I walked in the house and the smell hit me. There was my daughter standing on a chair at the kitchen counter "helping my Mom" make doughnuts. We used to shake ours in a paper lunch bag too. Yeah, home made doughnuts are the best, especially the ones made by our Moms.

I have a funny donut story too!
My grandmother use to work at Arkansas State University in the college cafeteria. They had set up a very large breakfast meeting for the professors and some honorary students (around 75 people). They had placed a donut at each place setting ahead of time.
My aunt was about 6 years old and went to work with her mom that day for some reason. While the grownups had gone back to the kitchen to do something else, my aunt went around to about 25-30 of the donuts and took a bite out of each one..........she thought one bite wouldn't be noticed!
My grandmother's boss thought it was so funny that she didn't get in trouble and even my aunt didn't.
It's always been the family joke with my aunt when "donuts" are mentioned!
