We got some tracts in the mail from Joel Hemphill...the title is "Can You Face Reality? Biblical Facts Concerning the Lord God and His Son Jesus Christ"
Who is Joel Hemphill? Is he on tv? Does he have a Pentecostal background? I've heard of some singers the Hemphills...are they related?
His photo looks familiar...but I can't place him.
He sure seems messed up in his doctrine...
Thanks for any info...

Many years ago JH used to pastor the Pentecostal Temple (?) in Bastrop, LA where J. T. Wheat is now pastoring.
He comes from a long line of Apostolics.
His father was the renowned W.T. Hemphill.
I heard him preach back in the 60s when he was still in the truth.

Joel Hemphill's father was a Pentecostal Icon in North Louisiana. My father was preaching a tent meeting close by and the whole Goodman clan was with Dad, Labreeska who was Vestal's niece fell in love with Joel BUT the Goodmans were Church of God however Labreeska got baptized she wanted her man. Joel pastored at Bastrop for a season and built a new church building there. It was there him and LaBreeska started singing and making records bothe are song writers. They were very successful in the Gospel Music industry. Sadly anong the way they lost their way the last time I saw Joel he told me he was pastoring a 'Spirit Filled Baptist Church' that was about 12 years ago. Joel has battled cancer on and off for about 15 years.
They are some of the nicest folks you could ever know it is so sad they have ended up this way.
What was their daughters name? As I recall she was about my agent and if memory serves me correct pretty and talented.
What happened to her? Does she still sing?

Candy Hemphill I forget who she married unless it has changed all of them live in your area. The boys Trent and Joey own a bus conversion company on Goodletsville Rd. Very successsful business. They are fine men they have their parents personality. I do think Cany yet sings some. Remember the song "I came on business for the King?"

Candy's last name now is Christmas. I will always remember that because it makes me laugh every time she's introduced in a Gaither Series Video. They introduce her as "Candy Hemphill Christmas"

Thanks for that. I read it and was sadden these are super nice folks. One of the casualties of Pentecost. W. T. Hemphill taught a certain strain of Presdestination not openly but in his local church. It marked his son Daniel for Branhamism and I am afraid it effected his whole family.

philjones,
Actually I did have a short lived career in show business!! As a teen I played one of the University of Texas students shot by the sniper Charles Whitman. It was a TV movie starring Kurt Russell.
I also had a small role in a film made in Natchitoches around 1981. I was the only white person with a speaking part in the film! LOL!! It was about the mixed race folks around Cane River. It starred one of Sidney Poiters daughters.

It is funny you posted this because just this morning I was thinking that I need to get some Community Coffee and try it. I probably have not had any for twenty or more years.
I actually saw some in a grocery store here in Nashville a few months ago. Now I just have to remember which one.

Hmmm...I will have to check. Our supermarket situation here is all messed up.
Most BiLo's in the area became Southern Markets except the one near me. It stayed a BiLo for about six months then closed and just reopened as a Publix.
A few years ago all of the Albertsons in the Nashville area closed all at once including the nice one near where I lived at the time that was less than a year old. Publix bought most of the locations and reopened them as Publix.
Food Lion is still Food Lion. Small and high priced.
Kroger has the best prices in the area but I know they don't carry Community.
Last but not least is the Super Wal Mart that overall has the best prices on amost everything even though they don't have the great sales that Kroger has.
I am guessing that I saw the coffee at either the now closed BiLo or a Southern Market. Last but not least possibly the Food Lion King.
I just clicked on the Candy Christmas link from the Hemphill family site and my memory was correct. Candy IS Purdy!!!!!
I also saw that her actual name is Carmel Lynn. So really she could be "Carmel Candy Christmas". Not as good as "Cholocate Candy Christmas, but still good!!

I know it is hard to believe but I got in trouble for talking to much. I think I also might be what a teacher would call 'an instigator"! LOL!!
My kids were perfect in grade school though. Teachers fought to have them. One teacher who had taught the first two actually went to the principle and made special arrangements to get the third one in her class.
They lost their "perfectness" in junior high school though!

I knew them all very well.
W.T. Hemphill spent many nights in our home when I was a child.
He was conducting cottage prayer meetings in Catahoula Parish, La. about 1930 when my father got the Holy Ghost.
I never got to know Joel very well...even less after he got married. He was a very genteel man with a wonderful and playful personality in his very young age.
I am saddened the direction that he took especially since his Dad was such an Apostolic stalwart.

I remember back in 1967 ( I remember it was 67, because I had a new 66 VW, $1625.00 tax and title :D) being at a fellowship meeting in north LA. and the Elder Hemphill preached and gave EVERYONE a real bashing about using God's titles, Lord, Savior, God, etc. and not using His NAME!
He let us have it about how the trinnies are the title users, but we are the people with the revelation of the NAME.

It is one thing to lift up the name of Jesus but quite another to direct people to ignore important terms like God and Saviour. Good grief!!

Be careful now, I'm 69 years old, will be 70 before the end of the year.
Careful how you refer to folks getting up there in years.
In 1969 (I think it was in 1969) Bro. and Sis. Joel Hemphill and family held three days of meetings at the ALJC church here in Cincinnati. They sang and Joel preached. I enjoyed all three nights. They sang a song about the Watchman that I don't ever remember hearing before then or since. I'd like to get a copy of that some how.
