We had a discussion Saturday about whether or not satan/demons can understand what you say when you speak in tongues.

Here are my thoughts on it.

If I go to China and hear someone speak in tongues in English I understand it. So if a demon understands English then they would also.

Yet, I am reminded of the scripture that says the Angels desire to look into it.

And there is another scripture that says something about tongues of men and angels. Would that not indicate two different types of tongues?

What are your thoughts?

I guess that would depend on whether Lucifer and his fallen angels can understand a "heavenly language" being angels themselves....

I want him to understand every word especially when the Lord Jesus Christ sends a tongue of rebuke.:rooting

Satan may not understand speaking in tongues I think I've heard him try speaking in tongues through a not so saintly vessel.

I believe there are different avenues of tongues. I'll do my best to explain. For example, when you pray in tongues it's not the same kind of tongues that is given during a tongues interpretation. So I do believe satan can understand some tongues especially an rebuke.

Personally I think since our prayer language we pray in during our private times of devotion comes from the Holy Spirit, the devil can't understand our praying in the spirit since our tongues are praying in a Holy Spirit inspired tongue. This is just an opinion.I don't see the devil wise enough to understand Holy Spirit tongues,it would seem above him.

Great question. I think the answer is no. Why would God let the enemy intrude on our intimate time? It would serve no purpose.

I have seen devils speak in tongues but never thought about the devil understanding tongues.

It doesn't actually say they desire to look into tongues though.

I have seen devils speak in tongues but never thought about the devil understanding tongues.Demon possessed people have objected to people speaking in tongues with the demons speaking through them saying, "speak to us in a language we can understand".

If the devil can understand tongues then why would a demon possessed person say they couldn't understand what the person speaking in tongues was saying?

The devil is not omniscient like God is. His knowledge is limited.

Interesting. Never heard that said before.

I agree they are not omniscient and their knowledge is indeed limited.

But is there any scripture that says one way or another?

I have heard that people that go to foreign lands and hear folks speak in tongues in a language they understand, it seems they are always praising God in that language.

You know the demons hates praise to Jesus do they probably wouldn't WANT to hear it. :)

I don't know about that...finding a scripture that supports that...but what of this?

1 Corinthians 14:1-13
1Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

2For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

3But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

4He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

5I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

7And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

8For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

9So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

12Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

13Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

This is a good question, and study.

I look forward to the responses!

Guess who?

I don't think "man" in this case refers to angels. Don't know if it includes them also are not.

This is a tough question that I was asked and that is why I am bringing it to the table for the heavy weights who either haven't seen this thread or they are dodging it. :)
