Growing up in NY and getting used to all the great foods available only in the North East is tough when you're living in TX...
Right now, I'm craving a genuine Ba-Tampte kosher garlic pickle. They are so yummy. Occasionally I can find them at a local HEB grocery store, but it's hit or miss.
I also miss Sabrett skin-on hot dogs. The only ones close that I can find are from Boar's Head and they're rank expensive.
It's also tough to find a grilled sweet Italian Sausage sammich on a NY club roll here in Texas. I've yet to find one even close to the stuff you can get up north.
Thankfully I found a couple places in Austin that have excellent NY pizza. Just like home... and in some cases, BETTER than some of the joints at home.
Talking to Dannyboy Aleeeseeeeeeah.... he misses Drakes cakes Ring Dings and Yohos... they're good too. Can't find 'em here at all.
Any food y'all miss since you moved away from where you grew up?

Kosher Bagels fresh from the cooker.
The Chocolate Chip Cookies, Cakes, Fresh Fruit pies and Fried Cakes (not yeast doughnuts) from Freihofer's.
The Mint Chocolate Enrobed Chocolate Chip Cookies.
and Cheese Danish Strips from Entenmann's.
Since they merged and the Freihofer now cooks poptarts in the Albany bakery, I bet they are nothing like they were.
Calzones and Canoli from the Boston North End type pizza shoppes!
D'Angelo's sandwiches, forget the cold cut junk at Subway.
We are going back in July.

I can find the Entenmann's stuff here... well some of it. I can find the cheese danish and the crumb cakes. I miss the Entenmann's chocolate chip cookies bro. They were yummy.
Ain't no bagels like NY bagels, bub. They don't even come close here.
I miss Stella Doro breakfast treats too. They were so delicious. When I go home, my mom buys a couple packages just for me. ;)

Entenmann's cookies were hard and crumbly. Freihofers were softer. They made Hermit cookies, Fruit cookies, and during the holidays Black Eyed Susan and Butter cookies.
Entenmann's Mint Choc Enrobed CC cookies rivaled Girl Scout Thin Mints. No one could eat just one.
NY Style Bagels are about the same through the Northeast. The NW has Starbucks and Lattes' New England Bagel shops with Green Mountain Coffee.

Oh, it's lunch time for me...since I'm here in downtown Manhattan right now, looks like I'll stop by the corner vendor and have him fix me a delicious Sabrett skin-on hot dog with all the works on top...then I'll stop at the deli and get me some Ring Dings and Yoho's and a bottle of Yoohoo....after that, I'll stop over at Giuliano's Pizza and get me a calzone....yummy.

Aren't they fries cooked in Hog Grease?
Must be like the funnel cakes sold at the fair, in the same oil that cooked the fish...

I miss the ground beef from back home. Most of what's sold here in the grocery stores is horrible! It has the gristle ground right in and it's kind of a rubbery texture. Just awful!
I've found some at a couple of the smaller grocery stores that's better and I'll pay a little more for it 'cause it's definitely an improvement over this other junk.
I can't figure out why it's such a lower quality here. I would have expected the opposite to be the case.

When I was young my Grandmother made these great apple turnovers. She died without giving anyone the recipe or telling them how to make them. Many have tried to make her turnovers and no one has done it............

What in the world are hog fries ?
It is where they cut up a hog and fry it in really deep pans, kinda like those pots that they used to boil hot water in and then add the laundry and stir it around. Well that's the same precept here, except it is with grease and hog meat.
It's pretty good, but I can't think about what I'm eating...eeeewwwwww.

Isn't that just the skin of the hog? Called Pork Rinds?

I miss chowder, cooked outside in big black kettles every year. My husband thinks that's the grossest thing ever. Also, we had homemade apple butter cooked outside too. Yummmmmm!!
I miss sweet cornbread, since I now have to make it totally without sugar for my southern husband and kids.

Amen, Sister, I really miss the real white American Cheese. There is nothing like it here. And, Seafood on the East Coast is Worlds away from the West Coast. Food is better on the East Coast IMHO. I grew up in the city that Schonland's Hot Dogs came from. When I was a CNA, working in a Nursing Home I took care of the woman whose Husband founded the company.

I miss my Grandma's creamed potatoes and peas.
I miss taterberries!
My Grandmother would take freshly dug small red potatos (from the garden) and cook them, then make a cream gravy and put the potatoes in the gravy.
Taterberries yum.
