Amy sounds flat on this song. I think she's trying to hard to go places she's never been before. I think a different song would have been better for her. And she looks bored.

She's got talent for sure. Sounds a little breathy on this song, but it's a good fit for her. What the heck is she wearing though???

She's a definite for the final 12.

Here is another story.....there are medical conditions that make people appear as though they are on drugs or drinking....

NEW YORK (AP) -- Paula Abdul's spacy behavior on "American Idol" has prompted many to ponder if there's a tumbler or two of booze in that red cup on the table in front of her on the Fox talent contest.
That's nonsense, the 44-year-old "Idol" judge tells Us Weekly magazine in its Feb. 16 issue. "I've never been drunk. I have never done recreational drugs," she says. "Just look at my 20-year career. Tell me someone who is into partying or doing drugs that could have done that."
In her five years on "Idol," Abdul - a singer and a movie, TV and stage choreographer - has weathered criticism about her sometimes odd behavior, which has included slurred and garbled speech, and her not-so-subtle gushing over the show's young, male singers.
"There have been 100 million lies about me," says Abdul, who has said she's taken prescription medication for health problems, including inflammatory arthritis. "I'm squeaky clean. I've worked my ass off my entire life. (But) being involved in the show causes people to question everything."
Last year, Fox announced that Abdul signed a deal to put up with Simon Cowell - oh, and judge, too - on "Idol" through 2008.
"I have never missed a live show," Abdul notes. "Even when I had surgery on my hand (for an infection caused by a botched manicure in 2004), I left my hospital bed to go to the show."

I am "withholding" judgement on the guys until next week. I think they had a bad case of nerves...because some of them did not sound like anything we heard did the previous auditions. I hope my thought here is correct.....

Some of the contestants will get help with their "look" and sound, and will become more appealing as the weeks go by.

Also keep in mind that each contestant got to sing a song of their choice this week. Soon they will be asked to sing a certain style of song, and some of them may sound great on only one particular style of music.

There are a few of the guys that could win it all IMO. The first round is a ball of nerves for the contestants, and I expect a big improvement next week!

BTW, I'm pulling for the shy black girl from my town; Brentwood, Tennessee! :)

I think she has a wonderful voice, but no way can she be an American Idol...not because she can't sing but because she would have to lower her standards...you have to wear makeup and dress differently and be able to dance you have to appeal to the young crowd...

You HAVE to????

I thought Fantasia was awesome tonight...

As for LJ and church...she is from Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and I know her choir director/minister of music, who I read in the paper here may be coaching her should she continue in the competition.

Fantasia...probably the best I have ever heard her last night (and this comes from someone who does not particularly care for her). She sang a song from the Broadway production of "The Color Purple" which she will be starring in.

Well I just noticed she has a strange speech impediment or something...she seems very talented, but I think there are a couple of girls that could out go her. Especially LaKisha Jones...that lady has a powerful voice!
She does have a speech impediment...has something to do with her "s"...."shisters" instead of "sisters", "shtill" instead of "still".

Yes...LaKisha Jones is great. American Idol is the platform she needed to be heard. HUMBLE too!!

I'm not sure that you'd have to wear makeup, but I really can't see a conservative pentecostal winning a show like this--especially if they aren't willing to sing secular music.

Perhaps I'm just shortsighted. When a pentecostal girl wins, ya'll can set me straight. :heeheehee

Remember what Simon told the one girl that sang a gospel song last year? That she was being "self-indulgent"? (something like that.....) That was her last night. And he's right, actually. AI is about a person who appeals to a majority of the voters...Gospel is a niche, and conservative appearance narrows that niche even more.

I think that you'd have to try to blend in, appearance wise, or you wouldn't make it.

I'm pretty sure Simon would have said something like, 'Pizza parlor karaoke', or 'forgettable', about her performance last night. I just kept waiting for it to be over. :dunno

I never really liked Fantasia either... Glad I missed her.

I have not been paying attention to AI this year... I, at first, found myself wishing they would have skipped most of the auditions and just gotten to the meat because that's what I really wanted to see, but I have not paid attention at all since they split up into the guys and girls groups...

I guess I'm just backslidden... lol

Simon's nastiness has hit a new low and I just don't have time to watch him belittle people and now the other two are getting in on the act as well... it's old. I was tired of it last year... and the year before. This year, I'm not even bothering.

The problem with Simon is the way in which he delivers his praise and/or criticisms. For the most part he is accurate. It's just his lack of kindness and the analogies he uses. I feel he is harsh in his remarks and deliberately goes for "shock statements." Also, I think he is hot.

I have to agree with him a lot. Like when he asks, "Let me ask you a question....do you think you can sing?" Like the girl who claims to have sang for the mayor of Houston who, when she auditioned, never said a word to the song, just made weird gluttal sounds. It means you agree with a lot of what he says. I also agree with him 9 out of 10 times. However, what makes him a jerk is not his opinion, but how he expresses it. It is possible to think someone is terrible and not cut out to be an AI (or whatever), yet not be nasty about it. Rejection is hard enough. His nastiness makes it worse for those kids because he crushes their vulnerable spirits with the ridicule on top of it.

Of course I know nastiness is good for ratings and so it will stand...

Truth is not the issue. Lack of tact is. You can express to someone that they are not cut out for the job, yet not be so cruel about it. Paula, though she reminds me of a foo-foo dog, at least usually tries.... but like I said, nastiness is better for ratings.

I agree...I said that I don't like it when he gets personal...it's one thing to say "you can't sing", but to say "it's the worst thing I have every heard" and then comment on them personally, but some of those people really truly MUST be there to get slammed by Simeon, I mean really if they have never had anyone tell them they can't sing before then they must not have opened their mouths...in public!

I hope one of this week's eliminations will be Antonella Barba. Not that I don't think she has a nice voice or anything...she just tweaked me wrong in Hollywood week. Best performances in my opinion are according to the following:

Chris Richardson-I really like this guy! He's got the voice and he's got the moves!! I love him!!

AJ Tabaldo-Excellent!

Chris Sligh-Great job!!!

Nick Pedro-I didn't like the song choice, but he did a great job on it!

Sundance Head-did a wonderful job.

Phil Stacey-slightly off beat a little, but good performance overall.

Blake Lewis-a rough start and seemed to 'miss it' a couple times during the song, but I liked it overall
and I loved his performance of it.

Brandon Rogers-not the song I would have picked for him, but he did well enough.

Jared Cotter-nothing special, IMO.

Sanjaya Malakar-how did he get this far? Horrible performance! Off-key, jumping notes...just horrible.

I wasn't totally positive about Brandon leaving tonight either. I figured it was a toss-up between him and Sanjaya...maybe even AJ...but with Sanjaya being in the top 4 last week, I'm afraid he's got the teeny-bopper vote and will hang around for a bit longer.

I'm pretty sure the kiddies are going to keep sanjaya around for a little longer. :wacko

And as for Antonella...her attitude STINKS to high heaven!!! It just really grinds on my last nerve to see her up there rolling her eyes at the judges with her snarky attitude. :ranting

I'm still shocked at AJ. I thought he did a great job...and Nick Pedro did pretty good too--both of them were better than Sanjaya[sp?]! That kid is getting on my last nerve!

GRRRRRrrr. I mean for one thing, I can't stand girly men! PUH-LEAZE, for the love of God, walk out on the stage without twisting your hips, and prissing, and own the stage and sing like a man and wipe that stupid grin off your face.

Antonella and her little blonde friend should never have even made it to the show. The blonde who was part of their group who forgot her words was much better than either of them. She should have been gone last week.

I think that's why Paula (and Simon) commented that it was a singing competition--hopefully to remind all The Stupids that they're supposed to be voting according to vocal skills, and not much else. :drawguns

I commented about this earlier...that was Bailey Brown...and I agree, she had a better voice than those two 'best' friends. That really tweaked me that those two spent so much time in indecision and bickering that Bailey got the short end of that stick. You could tell it was making her ill. gggrrrr :shifty

Is it just entertainment? I never understood how sports fans get emotional over "their" team winning when they never played for that team, don't own it, don't know anyone on it...none of the players are from their city and yet some how they feel represented by that team lol

Maybe this has been said, but Chris Sligh is the worship leader at Seacoast Church in Greenville, SC. Eddie went to that church for a conference last year; it's a Spirit filled powerful place.

Also, Tamor told me that Phil (from the Navy) is a Lee University grad from 2002 and sang with the Lee Singers, so I would assume he's Spirit filled too. Awesome!

Actually I didn't say 2002. I just said that he was a Lee grad. I think it's more like 1990. But I still think that's cool. He's also the Praise & Worship Pastor at his church in Florida. His parents and grandparents were in ministry in the Church of God.

The same could be said of Season 3 after phenominal vocals in Season 2. Last season had an incredible talent pool whose vocals were awesome. The most people to land record deals. I think coming off a great season, the talent is probably being compared to last season. I am waiting for the big competition starting next week when it is everyone for themselves!!
