U2
The Cure, but don't listen to them now because of the weirdness factor
Depeche Mode, weird to, and their music is dark.
Really, U2 and the Police would be the only music from the 80's that I would still listen to.

Yes I truly was Sister,
That's why I can not involve myself in things of that nature any longer. It has been years since I listened to anything but Gospel, but the mention of the names, and I remember the words, how they sang them and it brings back memories from the past that were sensual and provoctive, because we frequented a club that played country music. Those are things that God has delivered me from. It's so important once we are delivered from something, to not allow ourselves to venture back in that direction, because before we realize it, we will be drawn back into something we need not allow to overtake us again. Avoid the very appearance of evil

You folks covered most everything I listened to but I am surprised no one listed ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)!
Chicago, 3 Dog, Bread (just for you Renda), I was a huge Motown fan, Ronnie Milsap was good, loved most all Southern Rock ZZ Top, Led Zeplin, did a lot of Kenny Rogers (mostly his older stuff), Leon Russel (loved up on a tightwire), Bob Dylan for his lyrics, Santana was always good, BloodRock was about as sick as I got, I loved Chuck Mangione and his flugle horn, Stevie wonder was on the list ..... BUT
My number one Stevie was my main man, the now late but still great
Stevie Ray Vaugh!
Sweet Child O' Mine is the best ROCK guitar ever. Slash pulled out every emotion possible in that song.
A pastor friend and I were talking about who the better guitarist was . He claimed Eddie Van Halen. I said Slash was better.
We agreed EVH may have been better technically, but no one was better than Slash during the GNR days in bringing out the emotion in a guitar. Slash was and is a better player. When Van Halen was inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, Velvet Revolver, Slash's current band substitued for VH and played some of their tunes...
I like Guns N' Roses. ("Paradise City!) :slaphappy
Stevie Ray Vaughn!!!!!!!!!!!! I bow to your wisdom and great taste in music... Although I will question the Kenny Rogers choice. I don't remember BloodRock.

Bloodrock was early 70s and they had a hit with an overdose song called DOA... wailing sirens and all!
The Kenny Rogers stuff I am referring to is when he was with the First Edition and sang a lot of anti war stuff in the early 70s. He was a contemporary with Dylan and had much the same focus. He was not always a country icon. Do you remember "I just dropped by to see What condition my condition was in?"
(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)
I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in
I found my mind in a brown paper bag within
I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high
I tore my mind on a jagged sky
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)
I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in
I watched myself crawlin' out as I was a-crawlin' in
I got up so tight I couldn't unwind
I saw so much I broke my mind
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)
Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a "Dead End" sign
I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind
Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare
Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
I said I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
Yeah yeah oh-yeah
The decidedly desperate and sad lyrics of a generation!

Went to a Doobie Bros concert in a big stadium one summer in the 70's. I think Boston was the headliner. I remember getting worried that they might only play Michael McDonald's stuff.
I really liked the riff on China Grove ("when the sun comes up on the sleepy little town, down around san anton...") and had never seen it live. I sat patiently while the crowd bounced along in a mellow grove to the new Minute-by-Minute sound. But then, finally Tommy Johnston blew up the stadium with that riff...

Bridge Over Troubled Waters
When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Sail on Silver Girl,
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind

I will ease your mind

The only secular music in our home was an eight track of Merle Haggard. "Okie from Muskogee" "Silver Wings" "Mama Tried" "Daddy Frank" NOW THAT WAS REAL COUNTRY!!!!
It was the only secular music I really learned (outside of the stacks of Christmas albums mom had: Andy Williams, The Chipmunks, Barbera Streisand, Nat King Cole, Bobby Vinton, Burl Ives, Norman Luboff Chorale, etc.)

Sail on Silver Girl,
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
That's one of my favorite songs......I love playing that song on the piano.

I saw him in concert when he paired up with Dottie West! lol Didn't like him as much as Ronnie Milsap. He was my favorite! "It was almost like a song", "What a Difference You've Made in my Life", "Back on My Mind Again", "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends". lol!
I don't mind remembering once in a while. :D
How bout lost in the fifties tonight? Really liked that one as well.
You know, Ronnie Milsap, in spite of his blindness, was one of the most accomplished live entertainers I have ever seen! He was amazing!

You've heard of the Doobie Brothers, right? He was the unique voice with them, then he went solo and hasn't looked back!
He's done a couple Motown CD's and they are awesome!
I got tickets to his concert for Mother's Day - it's Sept. 14th!!!!!!
Renda,
One of the bands I played in before coming back to the Lord was called Just Bluffin'. the lead singer, a cajun boy named Gene Guillot, sounded amazingly like Michael McDonald so you can guess that we played a lot of Doobie brothers tunes! He is a great talent.

all right, I have gone back and looked and I do not recall seeing anyone name a great singer and a great group... Lionel Richie and the Commodores.

For Christian music, I liked Sandi Patti and Twila Paris, among others like Russ Taff, Michael W Smith, and the greats like the Hinsons and Kingsmen.
All right - kindred spirits! lol
I have a CD by Sandi Patti - Via DelaRosa is my favorite. That song is like reading the gospels over again!
I liked Twila pretty well and I do like Michael W. Smith. Have a couple of his CDs.

This thread has been so much fun to read thru. Ahhh, the memories!!
I got in trouble so many times for listening to so many of these groups. If it wasn't Gospel, it was sin - so if I got caught, I got in huge mud. (not from my parents. They weren't in the church. I got in trouble all the time with the pastor and with a good friend in the church who was always 'watching out for my soul')

Without You
No, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows
No, I can't forget tomorrorow
When I think of all my sorrows
When I had you there but then I let you go
And now it's only fair that I should let you know
What you should know
I can't live if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give any more
Can't live if living is without you
I can't give, I can't give any more
No, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

Oh man! You talk about the 70's ....I lived in those days....I remember going over to a relatives house and listening to "it never rains in southern california" by Albert Hammond...on a 45 RECORD SINGLE! LOL!
So yeah, I remember all the groups I mentioned and more. But I have learned to like different styles in music also. For example, when I was growing up in pentecost, as long as the musicianship was good, I could listen to country gospel like the old Hinsons or listen to some contemporary david meece.
Nowdays, I am trying to find the newer bands and listen to them as well. Because we are starting a preaise band and they are wanting some upbeat stuff for the youth.
Any suggestions anyone?? I need songs that are more youth oriented and not really "rocky" in nature, but more of a middle of the road type.

OOPs, I forgot James Taylor and Carol King.... Carol singing James' songs or Carol Singing Carol's songs or James singing James' songs was great music. "winter, spring, summer or fall, all you gotta do is call and I'll be there yes i will... Now ain't it good to know that you've got a friend when people can be so cold... they'll hurt you and desert you... they'll take your soul if you let them... ahhh but don't you let them... You just call out my name!
That could be and has been sang in church with a God focus with great impact!
Carol has a later project that I saw the other day.The cd cover shows

Thanks! I'll look it up.
Well I found it and listened to it and I am going to suggest that for our choir....but I was actually talking about Band songs when I meant our praise band...like Jars of Clay, Big tent revival, etc.
The reason being is because we are not doing choir music with our praise band...it will be more guitar, bass and drum band type music.
The guy in charge said he did not want to do choir stuff for the praise band...because we are going to mainly be doing shows in smaller churches and on the street and it is kinda hard to bring a whole choir to small settings.
Not only that, but we are going to appeal to youth that does not know God....choir type stuff is basically for people that are already in church. We are going to be doing outreach. But the song you gave is a great youth choir song, though.
