*Shrug*
He was for the resolution.
He was definitely a great man--he had a right to his opinion, as we all do.
Is that what you were looking for?

Who cares?????? Is that good enough?? :)
Well, maybe someone will enter Bro. Barnes' vote for him at GC.
Stuff like that happens all the time in Chicago. Lots of dead folks vote there.

He was very much for the resolution...
He also said the UPCI was like an old man in a rocking chair...and it would remain so without change.

He was NOT a political man. Therefore, he could give his opinion without worrying about losing his position. :)
From what I understand, Bro. Barnes was a highly respected man.
His opinion on tv advertising should hold some weight.
I do not want to hijack this thread, but I have a question about the tv advertising subject.
Bro. S.R. Hanby (Mark's Dad) was an old timer who planted quite a few churches in his day. From what I understand, he was conservative when it came to "standards." I don't think he owned a tv or watched tv. I have heard somewhere (can't remember where) that he left the UPC over the issue of advertising on tv. I've heard that he was in favor of using tv and did not agree with the oganization's ban on using it. Can anyone verify this?

Sorry. Stuff like this gets old and is completely unproductive.

No apology necessary. I quite agree and appreciate your response.
Knwoing the opinions of dead men regarding present day situations does not serve a great purpose. Some purpose, yes. But in the whole scheme of things it means little.

True enough. Daylight and dark though. They actually were used by God to write the Bible. In other words, God thought their thoughts had merit for all time.

Do you honestly equate a preacher's words to those in the Bible? Surely you see a major difference? Please tell me you see a difference.

Further, the discussion was centering around men's "
opinions." I do not personally believe the writings of the apostles were entirely their opinions, do you?

Oh there is a difference .... the apostles walked with God and got their inspiration from God .......... Do true called preachers get theirs and base their lives on what they get from God?
I'm sure the apostles were told word for word what to write! <---- TIC here

No i don't, but I also don't think that because someone is dead that we shouldn't at least consider their opinions & life long experiences and wealth of wisdom.

For someone surrounded by debris, you sure know how to bring clarity to a discussion. :ernie

Ah yes! Every word they recorded is God-breathed. None of TW Barnes or DF Gray's were.

Why have preachers at all?

Why have preachers at all?
Mainly because God's word calls for them. But they are in no wise as authoritative as Scripture. They are to help with understanding and application as far as they are gifted to do so.
