Anyone have recommendations for a good church in the Phoenix area? One that won't be too hard on a woman who feels half-naked when she puts on a dress (i.e., backslider who is much more comfortable in slacks)?

Depending on where in the Phoenix Metro area:
Phoenix - The Pentecostals of Phoenix, Pastor Rob Bibb - UPC
Tempe - Christ Life Church, Pastor Philip Goldsberry - Non-Denominational
I second the motion regarding Christ Life Church pastored by my old JCM fellow student and former Christ Church Associate Pastor Phil Goldsberry.
The church has a UPC background in that it was founded by an exUPC pastor Jim Roam who died a couple of years or so ago.
I understand the church runs around 500-800 people so it is big enough to have a lot going on but small enough that you won't get lost.

In spite of what CC1 has intimated, please do not hesitate to visit Rob Bibb's church. His wife is an old Bible school classmate of mine! :) Rob is a moderate and I assure you you would be welcomed and made comfortable there!
Are you looking for a UPC church ? XUPC ??
There are 3 or 4 XUPC churches Liberal - Knutson, Goldsberry, Combs(formally Roam's) and another one that is slipping my mind (JCM Grad)
and a few XUPC ultra conservative churches (from what you said that wouldn't be what you are after lol) Abbott and Garrett
There are a few moderate Liberal UPC churches like Bibs and Hudson.
moderate conservative are Hogan and McCarey.

You can find him on the radio everyday in the jungle...oh, that's ROAM not ROME

I seroiusly Doubt if you'd like the church Comb's pastors now. At one time it was UPC but dan Scott made it into a catholic church (episcopalian) in worship and in practice. Comb's has tried to change it back a little.

So I did go to church today...and got to hear a full-blown sermon on the subject of tithing. This UPC pastor was preaching strongly against the spirit of Tobiah (see the book of Nehemiah) in the church. I am a polite person, so I waited him out (i.e., I sat there through the entire thing like a good girl and just let it wash over me). But this pastor was very clear that he is entitled to all the tithing monies. I'll be honest, that set my teeth on edge, particularly since he made it a heaven or hell issue. In his preaching, if you weren't paying in the proper amount of tithing, you would go to hell. And he made it particularly clear that it isn't tithing unless you tithe on the gross.
I have to admit, this guy was a very good speaker, but the tithing and the grandiose plans he's got rather put me off. I particularly noted that although they had an outreach some months back that brought in quite a few visitors to the church over a couple of weekends, it didn't seem to have made a huge impact on the membership all these months later. But the pastor wanted to hand out thousands of fliers yet again this weekend. He wants to have a thousand members in a couple of years.
I did note this for Thad's benefit: this guy mentioned that he wanted to advertise on TV and "it's been approved."

Rob Bibb is more liberal than moderate, Knudson, is no longer pastoring, he is going to Stacy Wileys church in Peoria.
A very good man and pastor is Bro Gary Hogan, a good balanced man that will treat you right. I dont think you could go wrong there.
All of these men that I mentioned are friends of mine, ....guess it just depends on your preferance.

I forget the original Outlaw's name he was UPC years ago but came out during the 'latter rain' movement and belonged to the IMA. James Outlaw the son pastored for years he is probably dead now or quite old. It was a good size church for it's day. I just wondered who has it and what happened to it and what they believe now?

Sounds interesting. Now I am curious. I know very little about the area because after spending a week there (Scottsdale) back in the early 90's the only way I ever intend to spend any time there is at gunpoint.
That area is so ugly it is painful. I don't like the desert (however I do like dessert). When you fly into Phoenix it is just sad to see al of the dirt and rock yards with a couple of cactus plants for decoration.
The resorts are pretty because they spend a forturne on irrigation but everything else is desolate.

You're going to think this is funny...I was in Tucson last month and that's what I thought about *Tucson*. Dry, dusty, full of rock yards. I know that's not true, but that's what I saw driving around. And I live in Phoenix!

LOL!!!
I did really like that tourist trap old Western town in the Scottsdale area that had the steakhouse with live entertainment, the train around the perimiter of the town, etc. The food and entertainment was actually quite good. The name of the place escapes me now.
One funny memory I have is that almost everybody I met there was from Minnosota! There were a lot of "Snowbirds" working as van drivers doing the transportation between the airports and resorts, etc.
I also thought it was funny that at our resort all of the old retired widows and divorcee's in the area would show up at the resort night club / lounge trying to pick up younger men. Most of them had endured a lot of plastic surgery and looked surprised 100% of the time (their facial skin was stretched so tight!!)

Thad, I have no idea what I'm looking for. Let me take that back. I do have an idea of what I am looking for. A church with some good preaching, where people aren't afraid to shout and there's good worship of Jesus. Lots of emphasis on worshipping Jesus. I was thinking about it and I guess one thing that put me off about the tithing sermon I heard today was that I didn't hear anything about Jesus and the altar call was to pray about tithing. Going to an apostolic church, that's just not right.
Keeping that in mind, I'm quite willing to go to a church that's more conservative if they're preaching Jesus.

Knutson doesn't pastor anymore. He's apparently making his rounds to try and get his license back with the UPCI.
Haven't been to Combs, not sure where he pastors.
Goldsberry has a great church in Tempe (formerly Roam's). Sharon Roam is still there as part of the ministerial staff. CLC is a great church in the middle of a building program.
If you're in the Mesa area I would definitely drive to Warner and just west of McClintock to check out CLC. Unfortunately Bibbs church is a good 45 minutes away, depending on how far east you are in Mesa.
Another UPC church nearby is in Tempe, Solid Rock, pastored by Brent Endris. That church is on Apache Trail (Main Street) and just east of McClintock.
The others, Hogan, Wiley, and McCary are a good 30 to 45 minutes away from the east valley.

I live in Gilbert, AZ. My in-laws go to a UPC church in Mesa. Tommy Hudsons church. I do not go there at this moment. But the Hudsons church is fairly balance as far as con-vs-lib. There are some real cons there, but the leadership is mainly moderate ad they do not mind to shout.
I go to CLC that Chaotic Resolved mentioned. It is in Tempe just off the 101 south on Warner it is just west of McCilntock. I been going there about a year. They are a non-denominal church but they have great music and they really worship Jesus. It is hard to find more sincere worshippers of Jesus. They do not shout and dance alot. Because it is more of a deeper worship thing. I love it! Pastor Phil is a great preacher. This past Sunday he preached and talked about Acts 2 and there were a couple that were in UPCers or people in 'bundage' as CC1 would say. Funny to see there reaction when he preached out of Act 2.
Go to ChristLifeChurch.org and click on sermons and listen to Pastor Phil preach about 'Restored' it is awesome.

There is a Comb's in Casa Grande, but the one that Thad mentioned is at Valley Catherdral in uptown Phoenix, Central and something. It is north of Bibb Jr's. It was pastored by Dan Scott that is at CC in Nashville, but I would not go as far as Thad did and say it is more Catholic or others. Just the name is different. They are definately Pentecostal.

There's also a church off of Country Club and the 60 in Mesa, in a plaza. It used to be a theater, so it's not a typical store-front church. There are two churches that use the building. I believe they're both independent.
New Creation - meets Sunday morning - Pastor Fowler
Living Hope Apostolic - meets @ 2pm Sunday afternoon - Pastor Ezekiel Ochoa
I know Pastor Ochoa and have visited the church. It's a new work and the people there are pretty friendly. I haven't visited New Creation, although I did play flag football a couple years ago with some guys from there.
I think that about does it for my little list of recommendations.

Wouldn't it be great if the AFF and all other Pentecostal forums were a place of encouragement and uplifting words - sharing GOOD reports and testimonies of what God is doing - instead of trying to find something negative to say about one another?
I would say that the church isn't doing too bad, having grown from just a handful one year ago, to an average of 134 members. The Pastor does have a vision that so far has been right on target. Unfortunately, Sibling, you happened to visit on a Thanksgiving week-end, when there were several members out of town, as well as some viruses going around.
The message on tithing is not a norm for him. He doesn't dwell on finances, but if the Lord lays it on his heart to preach it - it doesn't bother me because I believe it. By way of clarification, you missed part of what he said about tithing. He's not going to take it all and live on it. It's for the MINISTRY - which includes assistants, music ministers, all those who are totally involved in the ministry of the church.
This past Sunday there was almost a full house (although the outreach had to be postponed because of the rain Friday and Saturday) - and an AWESOME service! The presence of the Lord was strong. Wish you had been there.
Don't be too sceptical. Do you believe there were 3,000 added to the church in the book of Acts? Why can't 1,000 be added today? If God made a promise, He will keep it - He won't let anyone down.

Suppose it hadn't been me but someone off the street that had heard that message? I was shocked by it, in large part because I have heard tithing sermons before that turned into a general altar call and they worked. This did not. Seriously, it was very uncomfortable to sit there through a sermon that was *entirely and completely* geared towards tithing and directed only to the members of the church. I listened--I was waiting--for standard apostolic preaching including Acts 2 and I didn't hear a word of it.
As for cynicism--maybe it's all those years of education (including the process to become a lawyer) but "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." I don't consider that cynicism, but realism. I've been disappointed by more than a few grand visions that actually were more grandiose than based in reality.
*shrug* To each his own. It was just not a good experience for me.

1. In my book Rob Bibb is pretty liberal....especially according to most of the Arizona District direction.
2. CC1 ...you are full of bologna...Az is one of the most beautiful and Diverse states in the Union, canyons, rivers, mountains, forest you name it we have got it...well except for oceanfront property.
3. Wilkins, Franks, Myers, are independent, conservative GOOD men who would treat anyone right, I would recomend thier churches without reservation. (Greg are you reading this...give me a call)
4. Chaotic Resolve...have you ever considered Bro Hudsons church?...a very loving and intimate atmosphere.

We had a missionary at church last night and he was talking about the night his Dad received the Holy Ghost. Guess what the subject of the sermon was......you guessed it---Tithing! We sometimes forget just who God is and that this is His church. If he so chooses He can move no matter what the message title is.

Morningstar Apostolic Church in Gilbert, pastored by Daniel Lizzarraga. Not UPC, but an awesome Apostolic church, and very moderate/conservative.

I agree that it is beautiful... not because I am a snowbird but because I enjoy the occasional ruining of a good stroll. :D
BTW... someone is posting some good info on Thad's tab that I think was intended for this thread.
This is from Committed:
Wouldn't recommend Hudson's. Wouldn't say it's progressive. Went there a couple years. Some major problems. Most progressive are Endris (Tempe), Rob Bibb (Phx) and I think Wylie is pretty good.
Bro. Hogan is a good Supt. He's conservative - but not hard nose. He's kind.
Every district has it's problems because it's made up of men. AZ is a little more difficult, I'll agree. I've heard more than one say they were going to retire to AZ, but there's too much division in the District. Too bad we can't unite together to win souls instead of bickering on which standards are right.
I think there is some one else who also posted Phoenix church info in another thread in Thads Tab.

Let's see, I live in that part of the Valley where the dominant religion is a Utah import...that'd be Mesa.
I met Tommy Hudson once... I believe he pastors in Mesa? He was a wonderful person, very kind hearted. Place for everyone in the body kind of person. His wife as well. When they were here they had a huge heart for evangelism.
I can't speak as though I know them personally but I was impressed with them when I met them.
There are faults every where, in every church, in every pastor.
Concerning Tithes and preaching on giving... if a person doesn't preach on tithing continually, but I just happened in to a service where they were... I would not judge that church by the one sermon. Just my opinion. If teaching and preaching on giving makes a person uncomfortable... well, I'm not judging at all.. but it shouldn't make anyone uncomfortable (saved person that is... sinners it would more than likely not be a comfortable topic...) The Lord Loveth a cheerful giver. It's part of being a Christian.. and every thing needs to be spoke on once in a while.

I know TH. I went to his church for several years. Infact I was his youth pastor for a couple of years. He has always been kind to me except on one occasion. But as you said there are problems in every church. I have been told stories from generations ago and the problems they seem to have, seem to keep resurfacing. It seems as if some of the problems are caused by them. I know some other things about some other situations and I stopped going there because of some of it. Some of my family still goes there and they love it and will stay mostlikley forever. There are worse churches to go to. Several years ago Sis JH wrote a book 'Dividing to Multiply' it seems af is they divide the church often. I have seen it a couple of times in several years. The first 'split' was not all on them. The second was mainly them. I love them and wish them well. I still visit on occasion during the evening services. But I could not continue to go there because of some things. BUT they do love people. They love everyone and will love you more if you choose their side on every situation. I can only say it is very interesting there.
I never heard of a "pastor David Abbott". Is he related to Lou?
Don't you mean "Bud"? Lou was the Costello.
I know that this is an old thread, but I seldom get on here so I thought I would address some of the things on here.
1. In my book Rob Bibb is pretty liberal....especially according to most of the Arizona District direction.
2. CC1 ...you are full of bologna...Az is one of the most beautiful and Diverse states in the Union, canyons, rivers, mountains, forest you name it we have got it...well except for oceanfront property.3.
I was speaking about the Phoenix area. I have only been to Phoenix and Scottsdale. God would have to appear to me in a burning bush or some other similar form and tell me directly to move there or I would die before I would consider the Phoenix area a place to live.
Thank heavens different folks have different taste so pretty much the entire United States is populated! LOL!! I just personally found the Phoenix area desolate and depressing except for the resorts in Scottsdale and a few other places artificially improved through irrigation.
Givem me hills, mountains, green fields, streams, etc any day over what I saw. (yes I know there are hills there).

Exactly. "Bud" would know "Lou" if they were related. :)

No, they are NOT definately. They have joined up with Church For the Nation with a trinity belief. :sad

You know when we first moved here we went to visit one of those churches. I have no problem with what they teach, was what I grew up in, but we were not treated friendly. At least people spoke to us, more than I can say for one church in north Phoenix, pastor's last name starts with an R and ends in a K. THAT church never even SPOKE to us.
Back on track here, they spoke and all but no one seemed interested in the strangers amongst them. They obviously, in my opinion, did not need more members or care about people they did not know.
Sorry but that way my experience with one of their churches.

These churches are tremendous....Bro Garretts is one of the largest and you will find a spirit of worship there like no where else.
Browns and Abbotts are great too.
