Why is this such a big victory?

1.4 to 1.5 million votes and of those 10% voted for a man not even running......

yawn

Republicans loose when they run as democrats.

Actually, not quite.

Bush Sr lost primarily because of Ross Perot, the third party candidate who got 18% of the vote, and siphoned off enough votes from the Bush to give the election to Clinton.

Nader pretty much did the same thing. He got less than 3% of the vote, but he took a lot of votes from Gore, including 97,000 in Florida which made all the difference. Bush wouldnt have won in 2000 if it wasn't for Nader.

I'd say because of political momentum. Campaigns live and die by it. It established him as the frontrunner going into super tuesday. Lack of momentum is why Giuliani's poll numbers dropped like a stone in Florida. And momentum is what led McCain to the Florida victory.

PS...
This same momentum is probably why Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to endorse McCain tomorrow in California, as reported tonight on Fox.

at the end of the day, GSR did not get re-elected.

by the way, Ron Paul just said that Ronald Reagan wanted to return to the gold standard.

Yes, I know. But it was because of the vote being split, not because of him "not being what we are".
Thats my whole point.

I do not get excited about polls where there is neither a Demo or Rep nominee. Besides, polls have a way turning around on a dime. It happens. This is especially true when one candidate says something really dumb as a slip of the tongue, it then is magnified to be bigger than the tower of Babel.

I'm not excited about McCain. For what it's worth. :lol

Right...

I would not count Romney out just yet. He has it all together. He is ready to be the President. I like him too. He was my man from the start although I would have prefered Thompson if he could have stood a chance.

We need strong, tall men with statemen looking qualities lighting upon their brow. Big men with noble character, broad shouldered men with conviction who are well able to inspire a nation. Men with a certain look of destiny in their eye, able to impart vision. Tall men with "presence" that command attention like George Washington and Ronald Reagan are in need to fill the highest office in the land.

Send the women folks back home from Washington. They are needed around harth and home. Women wearing breeches do not impress me as leaders, nor do they inspire confidence or instill visions of greatness.

But what he has going for him is that:
1/ He's not Hillary
2/ He has a good chance to beat Hillary in a head-to-head matchup.

One thing to watch here is what K Street does over the next week. If all the GOP lobbyists and interest-group types rally behind McCain, this thing is over.

If they reserve judgment till after Super Tuesday, Romney has a sliver of a chance.
