God understands all no matter what language you use english, french, spanish etc.. no heavenly or angelical laguages exsist in the bible..

It is a spiritual level of communicating with God rather than something we control. We are able to turn ourself off and let our soul commune with God. I pray that some day you will receive this blessing and understand.

I thank ya'll for praying for me to speak in tongues thats all fine and dandi (sp) but would it not be a better to pray for all the lost souls out in the world that have never opened the bible and do not have a clue about Jesus.

Praying in tongues is a way we edify/build ourselves up.
We don't understand it and don't need to.
It is personal communication between our spirit and our Father.
It does not go through the filter of the mind.
It is prayer energized by and helped by the Holy Spirit.
It is called praying in the Spirit or praying as helped by the Spirit.
Some references are:
Jude 20
Romans 8:26-27
Ephesians 6:18
1 Cor 14:2, 4, 14-15, 18, 39

NORMAN's answer is 100% the truth...look in the parallel bible if you dont understand what it is saying. I have experienced the speaking in tongues and I would call it a miracle every time it happens. God calls it a "gift", so that's what it is! I know how my life was before " the baptism of the Holy Spirit" compared to "after"....I don't want the life BEFORE anymore!

The Holy Ghost is a gift from God - why would anyone turn down a gift from the giver of life and lover of my soul!!!!! I don't have to understand - just receive it and enjoy the strength and peace that gift brings! The gift is all it's promised to be -

There are numerous reasons.
1st, is it really from God?
2nd, why would I want to speak gibberish? (keep in mind that I *have* and still don't get this)
3rd, aside from "getting saved" that some of y'all here think it's for, what is the purpose of this?
4th, what benefit comes with this?
5th, what new or greater responsibility comes with it?

Yeah, say it's a gift. Nothing else God does works that way. There's always a give and a take, so what is it here?

I think that is the point of the press release.

It is said that folks do not "try" to speak but simply allow God to speak through them. The absense of frontal lobe activity seems to validate that they are not thinking about what they are saying, at least.

I agree. I do believe in speaking in tongues, and that it is for us today. Although some people may "fake" it.

Stephen, on your point, I would have liked the scientist to scan someone who was just "blabbering" without thinking... Just talk, don't think. I would like to see what those scans showed.

1. Yes
2. What is gibberish to you, is known to God.
3. With the Holy Ghost comes power to witness and realization that He can control the tongue, most unruly member of body.
4. Benefit - just a down-payment of things to come.
5. The more truth revealed, the more responsibility to reflect that truth to the world. To whom much is given, much is required.

Not trying to convince you one way or the other - but I was there when it happened to me!!!! Faith is not always logical, probably hardly ever logical - it appears you're trying to find the logic to receiving the Holy Ghost - just my 2 cents worth!
