Let me go further, before I planted the church I now pastor, I assisted in a church. It took me a while to realize the pastor had a very bad anger problem. I mean violent anger.
I had committed to stay a certian length of time, and felt that I should live up to that commitment. After recognizing his problem, I began to withdraw from him gradually. I served my two years and went to plant a church.
During my tenure, we had a great relationship, and I was considered downright Heavenly. When I left, I became the scum of the earth (in his eyes). I will not tell you all of the horrible things the man did. I will tell you that all of his vitriol got him nowhere, because during my stay at his church he had promoted me (throughout the district) as virtuous and a real help.
My decision to remain for the duration of my committed time was a bad one.
One of my sons picked up his attitude, and I deal with it occasionally. Every once in a while I catch myself responding (without conscious thought) in the way this man would.
My point?
Be careful what leadership you place yourself under. It can have long-lasting effects.
