Re: This Is Why Non-Christians Hate Us

There was a 20/20 study done in 2006 I think, where they perform studies on charitable giving. What they concluded shocked us all. There were political slants reporting which political party association represented more givers, and there was secular vs. religious giving. The study found that a person is 57% more likely than a secularist to help a homeless person, for example. They talked about who the people are that donate blood. Income-ratio-to-given was also shocking. It's an interesting report.

So that's back to Timmy. We won't just "relax." The fact is, believers make up a huge part of charitable giving in the world today (many would argue they are a clear majority). So give with us, let's do it together. Pat Robertson is one voice of millions. I'm sure we could dig into the closets of agnostics and atheists and find some sordid skeletons. Surely. So let's not crucify all followers of Christ, by the one who says something hurtful.

(Of course, as He usually does, He will say Yes to some people who ask, and No to others. But, His ways are above our ways, so I'm sure He has a good reason for that. :thumbsup)

Some days I really enjoy your contributions, other days not so much. This is an "other days" moment.

Why?

Pat Robertson does NOT speak for the majority of Christians. Christians are compassionate. They're generous. Christians give. A ton of us always respond to disasters. Always. The UPC has sent a group to Haiti, nearly every Christian email loop I'm on is discussing ways Christians can help. There is no need at all for Christians to feel bad on this front.

AFF prides itself as being a place for open and honest discussion. You have a reputation of being a respectful, and well-mannered poster. Though often, your words are dripping with sarcasm and cynicism -- and borderline mockery of those that follow Jesus. Your purpose on the forum has been explicitly stated many times (and if anyone has doubt they can read your postscript), it's not to engage discussion on matters that you have doubts, it's to parade your unbelief.

I have hope for you. And so do others, obviously, which is why so many like you. However, some of your brazen assumptions, conclusion-stretching and sarcasm can be quite frustrating at times.

Christians aren't big yellow smiley face animations. They are real people. You, as a professed unbeliever, are here on a believer's forum. Just wanted to remind you of that. Someone objected to using the analogy of the word "house" but it's a true analogy.

Absolutely.

And any study into charitable contribution supports those who follow Jesus as being gracious and generous.

You are right, and I apologize for generalizing. There are good and bad people in every religion (or non-religion). :thumbsup

As I quoted a stat in a positive way, a VERY interesting article just came out in ChristianityToday about evangelical obsession with doomsday stats. Worth the read!

Thank you. I appreciate AFF's hospitality. If I crossed a line, I apologize. But can you actually address some of the points I have made? E.g., is it not true that Jesus (according to those would would ask Him and report the answer they received) would tell some people Yes and others No? I'd have to see it to believe it, if His answers are all the same!

And, if God did bring this disaster on Haiti in judgment (though I haven't seen anyone actually claim that He did, other than Pat Robertson -- as he strongly implied, anyway -- some have said that He may have), am I wrong to say you ought to just back off, and let Him take care of it as He sees fit?

There's no need for tears. Christians are doing their part, as always.
