Re: GREAT NEWS - Jackson, TN
I tend to agree with Mrs. BOOM, but I will say this- I find that our people are not as community minded as other denominations. And have just recently put an emphasis on this aspect of outreach. After living through a couple of natural disasters I can say from experience that only in Katrina did I see the UPC churches begin to reach out and help communities. When a tornado hit our neighborhood several years ago, the Baptist church came to clean up my grandmother's yard. I am not trying to be negative, just stating the facts as I see them.

Re: GREAT NEWS - Jackson, TN
MsBoomm, I am not directing my opinions at all UPC churches. I was making a statement that is interesting that it seems that the UPC churches are not the ones helping. That is all I am saying. I do get the sense from the UPC churches I have been around are not community minded. I had an Asso. Pastor tell me once that his church changed the name and almost added the word community in there. He said that he squashed the idea because it makes you do outreach and be community minded. I know that this does not speak to all of the UPC churches, but some do have a bad rap for not being caring churches. I certainly agree with you that there is alot of good that can come out of this. Seeing the Mighty God in Christ would be great. My guess is that these churches are not too far off in beliefs anyway. But it would be great to see what happens.
This brings another question, what if some of the AG saints want to join the UPC church would it be right for the pastor of the UPC church to take those saints? I am just playing devil's advocate. It is an interesting thought, if I do say so. |
Re: GREAT NEWS - Jackson, TN
JT - I agree that UPC churches should be more community minded and helping in disasters, etc.
HOWEVER, I don't think you can compare a UPC church not wanting to "rent" to another group that want to have services. We're not talking they lost their building by some loss - just rent the building for services (maybe until they buy a place.) Having been associated with a church that rented their facility to another group - it wasn't always a pretty sight. There is a quite a bit of headache involved. Some people just don't take care of something that isn't theirs. Plus as an aside, in some states, churches have to pay tax on any income received from renting or leasing any portion of their building/property on a regular basis. Maybe they don't want to worry with something like that when they chose not to rent to another congregation. JMHO Now.... back to the topic at hand. None of us can really know what the full circumstances are - but I'm glad that the AG church offered - and like someone else - maybe God has greater plans for it than we can imagine. |
