So, having said that folks, please excuse my ignorance in asking this, but is not this theory nothing more than another view of the purgatory teaching of the Catholic system...in hell for a time?!

It has no linkage to Purgatory. Purgatory is in Catholic belief where one suffers for sin for a time and THEN goes to Heaven. Annihilation teaches the ETERNAL DESTRUCTION of the wicked.

7: And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8: In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; 2 Thess. 1:7-9

Yes the wicked go into the lake of fire and DIE. This is the SECOND DEATH. The first death is that which every man experiences. The second death is that which brings the death of the soul.

Note the CONTRAST between death and eternal life.

21: What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22: But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

What does Paul say is THE WAGES OF SIN?

Where does the Apostle Paul say the wicked will live forever burning in Hell?

If there is any interest I will start a thread on Annihilation. I have made a five part study (short parts) on the doctrine. It is certainly not all comprehensive of the topic but it is hard hitting and to the point.

We are getting broadband tomorrow hopefully. Since I will also be working I may not get much time for it immediately.
