The purple outside layer is there to protect the fruit (white) inside. It has a slightly hard outter shell, and then the red pulpy outter pod. The fruit is similar in size and appearance to a tangerine, except it's white. It is much smoother in texture than a citrus fruit though. I can't really explain what one tastes like, but it's like a bunch of tropical fruits all rolled into one. I LOVE mangos and thought a mango was the most delicious thing in the world...until I tasted a mangosteen. Definitely THE most delicious thing I've ever eaten.
The mangosteen is known as the 'Queen of Fruits'. I had these while in Singapore, so I don't know if they are even available over here in the US.
