"Who are these People?"
The other night my husband and I were at the dinner table with my eleven-year old daughter. The conversation had come around to a particular thread and so we were discussing it. During the conversation, my husband I were talking about different points that were being made;
"Well did you see what Dizzy wrote about ....," "and then Pastor Poster said".... "Well yeah but Rico said", "but what do you think Ferd meant by...", "and RandyWayne was hilarious when he wrote..." "Yeah but on that other thread, 1399 made the point that..." "Well Rhoni and Renda both shot them down..." "And Sister Alvear was asking about...." "Rico and Dan were going at it again..." "ReformedDave has been there, though, and he said..." "Abundant Grace changed his profile picture..." "Amazing Grace made me laugh when..." "DividedThigh and Sam were discussing..." Finally, after a few minutes my daughter (looking completely confused and flustered) Blurted out, "WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?".... :ursofunny I just about fell on the floor laughing! |
Re: "Who are these People?"
:ursofunny That is funny!

Re: "Who are these People?"
That is funny and has happened to me also!!!
Sherri's husband calls us her imaginary friends - - funny thing is he's met a lot of them now and can no longer say that! |
Re: "Who are these People?"
You can get her back... just wait till she starts talking about Myspace.
"I can't believe that she removed you from her friends list and didn't say anything", etc. I have overheard a few conversations like that. |

But Mom and Dad having "imaginary friends" as Renda called em... apparently that was too much for her! |
Re: "Who are these People?"
I work from home, my only real friends are my neighbors. lol.

This actually happened to me and I'm 31 years old!!! It was hilarious...when I realized what had happened, I felt like I was back in high school! Talk about laughing my head off! What's funny it's all because I didn't respond to a message (I think, not sure)...I didn't even get the message until AFTER they'd already deleted me...it was hilarious! Sorry for the comment that has nothing to do with this thread... |

I sooooo know what you mean!

Re: "Who are these People?"
What's really hilarious is when you tell someone about your friend and then have to confess that you've NEVER met them!!!!

Then I have to explain that I have been engaging in Cyber-Friendships... LOL |
Re: "Who are these People?"
I had to go through the three-degree with my son when I was going to meet some posters for dinner. He couldn't understand how I could be so excited about hanging out with people I'd never met and "mom, they could be serial killers" - - lol!

Re: "Who are these People?"
I was going to meet Timmy TODAY in NYC. My wife said, "I am not going to spend several hours of our vacation talking to one of your online friends about religion". It made me feel like CC1. lol.

Yeah really. I'll be telling someone about something on here, and I just say something like, "A friend of mine who lives in Texas said so and so" or "I just got a message from a friend who lives in California". I just can't bring myself to tell them that the friend is imaginary!! |
Re: "Who are these People?"
It truly isn't much different than my work relationships. I have never met my last three bosses in person and have only met a few of my co-workers. Many people I've known for years I have only corresponded via e-mail, instant messaging and conference calls, it just seems natural to have the same kind of relationships in my personal life.

Re: "Who are these People?"
Noone in my family says anything but they do give me funny looks. But because I know a few people here, it's not a big thing. I am even related to one. Most of you are very real to my heart.:)

Dizzy...since I was in kindergarten and she was in HS...lol Light...I met last Christmas, though my dad has known him for years. ReformedDave...I saw one time in church, he was playing something with keys, I am musically illiterate. I know a few lurkers who rarely post. There are a couple more but they would probably deny knowing me. |
Re: "Who are these People?"
I have to say that being of a more liberal persuasion, as far as the UPCers are concerned, I came to this forum with much fear and trepidation. My husband worked on me from February until I came on, he kept telling me, you are going to meet people just like us. I was pretty nervous about coming on here, and now I am an addict!
Renda's thread yesterday really made me think about the common bond that many of us share. A love for a people who may not accept our choices, but people that we love just the same.... And it is also refreshing to be able to discuss issues that have, in the past, consumed our lives, without talking to those who still live it (the ones in my family often find it offensive when you question their beliefs, or practices). You guys are so cool! |

No kidding! Growing up, there were many things that if you dared to question, even in a family setting, the room would just go quiet and you learned to never question those things (to that audience) again... for fear of offending them. |

What I highlighted in your post above is exactly right and it hurts me when someone questions our motives for being here because we are no longer "in UPC". I hope that some day they will truly understand. (I keep taking the "h" out of my name when you type it - lol)! |

The subways are fabulous midtown to downtown rockets. Soho can be a nice walk if you find yourself on the lower part of the island visiting the Ground Zero construction site (if you end up on the lower end --Battery Park, the Ferry can be a nice rest-your-legs, use a clean bathroom, cheap, cheap, cheap, boat ride over to Staten Island and just stay on the Ferry and return). I am hoping to take my daughter to midtown NYC in September. I think Manhatten is a very worthwhile way to consider the diversity and uniqueness of humanity...hope you enjoy your visit. |
