Obama: 'Lipstick on a pig' comment. Not Smart.

I'm wondering if the Sarah Palin phenomenon is making Obama get a bit nervous now.

This is not a smart comment on his part. As a matter of fact, if this story takes off, he'll probably cost himself a couple thousand votes with this remark:
Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.

"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."

"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."

"We've had enough of the same old thing."
The crowd apparently took the "lipstick" line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: "lipstick."

Well, of course and the fish reference to her fishing too!

The politics are full force on both sides!

I checked out the comments that accompanied the story. A lot of women find his comment highly offensive.

That was just a poorly thought-out comment on his part. That comment didn't win him a single vote, but it probably lost him some. This is bad publicity he doesn't need.

I think he might be cracking under the pressure. He was prepared to deal with Romney or Pawlenty. He wasn't prepared for Palin, and he seems to be a bit taken aback by the effect she's had on the race so far.

He has now made comments about her pentecostal background, and speaking in tongues.

They just showed it on Foxnews and he was trying to be "cute" you could tell by the way he stoped and smirked after he said it.

Just saw the comment on Fox News- I think he is running scared- The comment will further alienate voters.

Well for one at least they are talking about it, but I imagine they were making a lot of jokes at her expense.

I like the way Fox talked about her being pentecostal with Britt Hume and other commentators is was very objective and fair without making light of chrisitan background.

I like how they said the issue is different than that of J. Wright (although but are about church beliefs), but Wrights remarks were not religious in nature but against America-

It's amazing to me how juvenile and superficial politicians are when you consider what is at stake. They trade jabs and barbs like they're running for junior high hall monitor.

(I'll see if the quote turns up though, or the clip turns up on YouTube. Maybe in context the comment turns out to be relatively harmless.)

I've been off google-ing it for the last few minuets, it's not our there yet! But I heard Hume talk about it today-

Hopefully I am reporting it correctly!

I find it kind of funny how scared Obama is of Palin. And McCain purposely or not did a great job selecting her for VP.

I think she's been a boost to his campaign way beyond his wildest expectations. I dont think ANYBODY, Democrat or Republican, foresaw this.

I don't think any VP in history has ever had this effect on an election campaign.

My husband says Obama will get angrier as he goes along. I have further revelation about this dangerous man. I'll post it later under the appropriate thread.

Obamanation is looking more accurate every day.

Yawn.....

That saying has been around in the south forever. "You can put lipstick on a pig, but(whatever someone is trying to portray or dress up, is still something else). Obama pointed to the fact that McCain has no record of being a change agent. I thought it was a well made point and a funny play on Palin's words.

I think the attacks on her religious views are below the belt. They are unacceptable and have no place in politics.

Aside form that, Sarah Palin will be welcomed to the big stage of politics just like McCain, Obama and any other person seeking the highest offices in the land has been. I don't understand why the pig comment would be anything out of the ordinary.

Because she used in when she talked about the difference in a Pit Bull and a Hockey Mom. Even the Democrats thought there was intent.

There was definitely intent to play on the words of Palin. He basically said that all of the change was being promised by McCain/Palin and then went on to list all of the similarities of Bush and McCain/Palin and that a pig with lipstick was still a pig.

Obama wasn't personally calling Sarah Palin a pig or anything of that nature. That would include some huge leaps and stretches.

Sorry, he was stupid for saying what he said after the Republican Convention. It was intent to many listeners.

I don't believe that was his intent to call her a pig, BUT to make the lipstick reference as to pull the rug out from under her (being like a pit bull).

You could be right Renda. I personally took the comment at it's face value that the McCain "change" pig dressed up with lipstick was still the McCain pig that wasn't about change.

After her performance at the convention last week, I'm not sure why anyone would doubt her pit bull tendencies.:heeheehee She's a tough cookie and made her attacks very well last week. After watching that, I have no doubt about her pit bull capabliities.

If McCain is seriously asking Obama to apologize to Palin for the comment, it would only be right for McCain to apologize to Hillary Clinton for calling her failed health care plan "just a pig with lipstick" in May 2008. The "Maverick" would definitely want to be consistent.

Most of us understand the point of the "pig with lipstick" metaphors and don't get all worked up about them.

Dear Everybody,

That was FUNNY. It was a jab at her lipstick comment during her speech and a OLD saying reflecting his message of change and the fact that McCain has "stolen" his change platform.

I hate when trivial things like this get blown out of proportion.

I bet you that McCain's people go to great effort to avoid words like "Black" "Dark" or anything else that could be distorted to represent a racist jab.

It's so childish.

McCain's comment was not on the heels of what Palin said about Hockey Mom's and Pit Bulls.

Anyone with half a brain would have not allowed that to go through in his speech unless they knew they could buffer it later, which is what they tried to do. I don't think, for the most part, it worked.

McCain referred to Hillary in the same manner, and said the exact same quote that Obama did, but was more obtuse in making sure everyone knew who he was referring to.
