Another reason to love Tennessee

I have enjoyed the 11 years I have lived now in Tennessee although I still consider myself a Texan / Alaskan.

I constantly have new experiences that make me appreciate it here. Last night on my way home from a business trip I drove through Memphis (ughhh) and then Jackson, TN on my home to the Nashville area.

In Jax TN, home of our beloved Sherri Cupples, I stopped for dinner at "The Old Country Restaurant and Store" that I have eaten at a couple of times before.

When entering the building I heard some great music and looked over at the ice cream parlor to see a folk / country band made up of two guitars, a banjo, a mandelin, and upright bass. Those guys were playing and singing so good it sounded like a record was playing. The vocal harmonies were spot on and it was just a real treat to stop and listen.

The music they were playing and singing was a style that I would never go out and buy or listen to on the radio but live and in person it is wonderful.

The audience was small as it was just a few people standing around listening and the diners and shoppers but these guys were clearly singing for just the enjoyment of it.

I wish I could have stayed longer and listened more. Reminded me of the time I went camping with my son way out in the middle of nowhere Tennessee and we went to a small town bowling alley and in the little restaurant area was three teenagers with overalls on playing a guitar & banjo and singing gospel hymns. Only in Tennessee! (ok well maybe in Kentucky also)

I read your story and relived some special moments in my childhood (the south). I'm a west coast rocker now but you just made me wanna "go back home" for a few days.

Thanks.

Texas, where you can stand in mud to your neck and sand blows in your face! At least according to my dad ,after his military duty.

oletime, sounds like you dad must have been in the panhandle. God to Austin Texas and the Hill Country and you will see some country apparently your dad never saw!

Sounds like maybe your dad was stationed in El Paso which is just dirt. Gotta remember Texas is big enough you can see just about any type of country (except mountains)

I love to visit Southern California but I like Southern living. Just simple things like in my town of almost 100,000 right outside Nashville folks on the opposite side of four lane roads still pull over and stop out of respect when a funeral procession is meeting them.

Thanks so much for calling and stopping by to see your old friends in Jackson!!!! NOT!

However, I wouldn't have eaten at the Old Country Store, because you leave smelling like fried Ho-cakes! But I would have given you a big hug in the parking lot - in a most platonic way, of course.

LOL!!! If it had been earlier I would have called but it was about 8 pm and I had a long way to go. I really do want to get by and see you guys and also the new church. I was thinking about you and Eddie while I was eating.

I had one of those Ho-cakes and way too many hush puppies along with some good ole turnip greens (or collard greens - I can never tell them apart), butter beans, and grilled and fried chicken! It takes a lot to maintain my physique but I am committed to it.

You are the best thing about Memphis! Well, you Beale Street and Texas De Brasil. You know good and well that if you live in Nashville you have to hate Memphis.

Plus don't forget Memphis is where my son in law got robbed at gunpoint by some brutha's. Not only robbed but forced to drive his car at gunpoint around the city and to an ATM.

I have a couple of hundred pictures that say otherwise about "landscapes" in the Phoenix valley.... then there is also this little monument called the Grand Canyon.

Yup. I drove the convertible to work today and had planned on taking off a couple of hours early to go riding with my significant other BUT yesterday started having a scratchy throat and by this morning realized that the spring cold part of my household had last week, and I thought I had avoided by going out of town on a business trip, has me in its clutches after all. By 11 am today felt like a Mack truck had hit me. Came home to work from home and the only one in the convertible is my wife who left a few minutes ago to go get us a pizzia. Arghhh!!!

Tennessee is awesome. Once you have been to Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and the Smokies you get spoiled as far as vacations go. We went backpacking last year in Frozen Head Natural Area and it was excellent.

Also I have noted that the people I have talked to or asked questions seem to be a very helpful and friendly group.

Just don't ever kid around and say you work for the Federal government! If they think you are out to get their stills and meth labs they will turn on you in a minute.:ursofunny

Sounds more like here in Ky. Tennessee is known to be pure as the driven snow.
