New Pope Elected Yet?

Was wondering if there has been a new Pope elected yet? Have not heard any news lately. Wonder what's up and who they're going to choose? Maybe an American this time?

It's only exciting if his name is "Peter".

If the guy takes the name Peter after all the discussion about the prophecy, I'll be stunned. Not saying it won't happen, but how on earth could he do that? Unless of course he wants to troll the protestants. :)

He is a nationally renown expert on Vatican affairs....

His take on a "sainthood" not many years ago was very insightful

"To be made a saint in-a the catholic church, you have to have-a four miracles. That's-a the rules, you know. It's-a always been that-a. Four miracles, and-a to prove it. Well, this-a Mother Seton-now they could only prove-a three miracles. But the Pope-he just waved the fourth one. He just waved it! And do you know why? It's-a because she was American. It's all-a politics. We got-a some Italian-a people, they got-a forty, fifty, sixty miracles to their name. They can't-a get in just cause they say there's already too many Italian saints, and this woman comes along with-a three lousy miracles. I understand that-a two of them was-a card tricks. " - Father Guido Sarducci

Even if you think Catholicism is wrong, the conclave is important for political reasons given the Pope's outsized influence on the world stage.

My mom was shocked to learn bookmakers were taking bets on the identity of the next Pope. We'll see who is right. I can't imagine the modern RCC going into Holy Week (starts March 24 with Palm Sunday) without a pope.

Re: New Pope Elected Yet?

My money is on Cardinal Angelo Scola the Italian Cardinal of Milan. I believe the last two Popes being the first non Italian Poples in a bazillion years they may return to tradition. Particularly since the largest contingent of voting cardinals are Italian. At the age of 63 he would be a relatively young pope but after the health issues of the last two much older popes this may be attractive. Old enough to be seasoned but not too old.

Jose Mario Bergoglio from Argentina is reported to have come in second in the last vote for Pope. However he is now 76 years old so age may be a major concern.

A compromise candidate could be Cardinal Peter Erdo the 60 year old Hungarian Cardinal. He is an expert on canon law and a highly respected University theologian. Kind of young though!

Three or four others are considered front runners for various reasons. Lots of speculation that because the area of growth for the RC church is Latin America that the new pope should come from that region.

Last summer our B&B was an apartment in a building across the street from the Vatican. Our apartment was on the 4th floor and looking out the kitchen window to the left you could see directly across the Vatican wall into the Papal Apartment building. We also were just around the corner from the entrance to the Papal museums that include the Sistine chapel were the votes are taking place. Literally a two or three minute walk for us. So I am visualizing all of the activity from the perspective of having been there last summer for the first time since 1976 when I was a teenager in Italy!

Interesting...some are even speculating on whether an American might "wear the shoes of the fisherman."

In addition to Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York that Lacey mentioned the one other American who is a longshot in the running is Cardinal Sean Patrick O'Malley of Boston.

I think that an American being chosen Pope is an extreme long shot. There are a lot of reasons not to choose an American and the only positive reason I can think of would be that they are possibly more "modern" and better able to handle the management and PR duties. Something woefully mishandled by Benedict.

Do you really think that the RCC is the Whore of Babylon?? Surely you have a better grasp on eschatology than that??

Like it or not, the pope being head of a religious sect a billion strong has a big impact on Christianity. Who's pope affects all of us.

How, you might ask? Take abortion as one example. The political power of the roman sect will be formidable in the battle against abortion. The fragmented nature of the thousands of protestant sects produces a system which simply does not have the clout of the roman sect.

"There are 630 Catholic hospitals in the United States, and one in six patients is cared for by one of these facilities. Not only that, the church manages 36 percent of health care facilities around the world. When you look at specific health initiatives, the Catholic Church is the biggest private provider of AIDS care on the planet, giving antiretroviral medicines, home care visits and counseling to one in four of the world’s 33.3 million AIDS patients."

Yep, these are exciting times. Who becomes pope will affect us all.

Black smoke - 1st vote NO POPE

Check back tomorrow! After today I think they vote twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, for a few days then if there is not a Pope they take a break to reflect.

Like they didn't all have their minds made up before they started. Is it done by majority rule?

This is such a political event. You better believe that that smoke will not turn white for a few more days yet. They want to milk as much publicity out of this as they can possibly get.
