Do you think they'll accept me??

I'd like to live with the Amish. I want to study them for a yr or so. Do you think they'll accept me? Or do they not like outsiders?

You may find a family or two who would be kind to you. But for any broad acceptance you would need to dress and live like them for a period, then make plans to become a member. This is not easy - 90% of the preaching and all the songs would be in German.

I still find the Old Order lifestyle appealing but mostly because of the deep family values and absence of divorce etc.

Dunno. Ask Emma.

Love the siggy!

Right,

I would dress and live like them. I would tell them that I am considering becoming a member.

berkeley 06-28-2007 01:37 PM

Stephen Hoover,

You was old order Amish?? I thought you was Mennonite.

Old Order Mennonite. We would have been nearly indistinquishable to you.

German speaking. No cars. No electronics etc.

What are the differenced with the Old Order Mennonite, and the Amish?

I know that the Amish are a split off of the Mennonite.

Margies3 06-28-2007 01:41 PM

Berk, aren't you in Southern California? Do you have many Old Order Amish in your area?

How do you feel about snow? Cuz we gets lots of it here in Ohio and they do in Pennsylvania also. and in MOST areas where I know of that the Amish have settled.

To the outsider the differences are few. We had electricity for major appliances. Most of the men shaved. We were allowed the use of small (no cabs) tractors to farm - provided they had no rubber tires (steel wheels)

You can start by living with some ex Menno chimney sweep family in one year you will be halfway there. I choose my bristles with pride - yes I do...

Margies3 06-28-2007 01:50 PM

Steven, correct me if I'm wrong, ok?

the Amish and Mennonites do not teach Oneness, Berk. And they baptize (by sprinkling, right?) in the titles. And heaven forbid you should consider speaking in tongues.

Standards-wise they've got Apostolic people beat all to pieces. But Berk, are you willing to give up all the rest just for the sake of stricter standards? (I'm curious, bro. Not condemning :) )

This isn't about standards. I was the Ultra Con poster boy at one time. :) Hey, maybe in a few years you will hear reports about the split of an Amish community over speaking in tongues.. :)

They use a "pouring" method of baptism.

There are some anabaptist writings that are Oneness but in practice they are mostly Trinitarian. I have some interesting facts on this I will share sometime...

Tongues? They are big on tongues. Mostly Penn. Dutch/German!!!

myhaloisintheshop 06-28-2007 01:59 PM

My dad is a "driver" for the Amish. They hire him to drive them long distances--state to state to visit relatives or for vacation--ect.

He has learned a lot about their lifestyle and at one point had one family that asked about my family's religion. They even attended a church service with my mom and dad--they did not participte but sat in the back and observed.

Earlier this year my mom got call from them--they are now tongue talkin apostolics!

We have some nice Mennonite people in Arkansas. Best place in the world to buy milk. My husband was telling me a story of a closing he was do for a Mennonite family. He said it was a big money deal and they brought their money in and started counting out the $1,000s of dollars and realized it was not enough. He said the older man said, "No brother ------- you brought the wrong bag of money go get the other bag"

Did they leave the community?

myhaloisintheshop 06-28-2007 02:49 PM

They had to---they are shunned now.

I'm really considering this... so any help would be appreciated.

If you know where there are Amish communities, please post them.

thanks

Ok, but can I ask why? What is it about the Amish that interests you. Are you seriously thinking about becoming amish. Do you want to be some sort of amish missionary, or are you just trying to simplify your life?

I want to spend some time with them... to study them. Don't want to convert.. but I'd live their life so I could be among them.

It's one thing if you are having religious morphosis and seek radical separation to fulfill a new worldview...

It's another thing altogether to briefly "experience" a lifestyle that involks thoughts of simplicity and nostalgic charm of bygone eras...

I think they would be onto you as a temporary devotee...

That fact is, you would not be very welcome as an observer only and would always be viewed with major skepticism if welcomed at all.
