I indeed miss these great voices!

I love the Goodmans.....yeah yeah I know....old people music.
BUT....Tiffany and I had the chance to sit and be with Howard and Vestal for quite a while before they died. GREAT and Wonderful Christian People.

Just thought I would post this as a tribute to them

NYLP,

I was not a Goodman fan growing up and especially not as a teen. However now that I am old I have found a new appreciation for their singing.

Howard and Vestel are buried in our church cemetary and called our church home when they were in Nashville. I remember many Sunday's seeing Vestel sitting in service so it was quite a shock when she died suddenly.

In my mom's room at the nursing home a couple of years ago someone put that Gaither video that is a tribute to the Goodman's by her VCR. I played it and was surprised at how blessed I was by the Happy Goodman Family singing so many of those great old songs.

Well lookee, lookee...

Good ol' Murrell back there on the back row.

My mother didn't have a TV in our home when I was growing up, but she played 8-tracks and records of greats like the Goodmans, Dottie Rambo, and others like Johnny Cooke (sp?--he sounded like a woman...LOL!), the Pierce's, Hinsons, Cathedrals, and so many others that I can't even think of their names, but their songs I remember well, and while my kids think they are totally gross or 'old', they bring back wonderful memories for me.

I have downloaded about 150 songs from that era, and about 50 of them are from the Goodmans. I love them all.

We used to listen to the Goodmans, Rambos, Segos, Hinsons, Hemphills, etc while getting ready for Sunday School. Then my wife would put a roast and vegetables in the oven before we left the house. When we got back home with our stomachs growling that place smelled heavenly.

I still like the Gaither videos (but I guess that's an age thing).

I have been to the CC Cemetery......I love the drive up to it....a definite touch of class.

Now the kids are grown and out of the house.
My wife and I like it a little quieter in the house on Sunday mornings.
After church we stop and eat somewhere before coming home.

I love to hear Bro. Murrell sing, and this is a classic, I believe he or Joan wrote this one. Youth Camp in Lufkin was not complete unless Bro. Ewing was the camp choir director.

My Momma and Daddy used to drag me to those Goodman sangin's everytime they were in our town........

Vestal and Johnny Cook fighting it out over "Stepping on the Clouds".......hated em then....but now they are memories........

Brother Strange 07-12-2007 12:56 PM

Murrell, my old school chum has a really great, great voice.

Hey! Anyone remember the Seigo Brothers and Naomi? Loved them too. Here in the deep South, we used to have those all day singings under the trees. Those were the good ol' days for sure.

Margies3 07-12-2007 01:02 PM

Now yer talkin' MY kinda music. :choir

Walt used to hate this stuff, but with the Gaither videos out, he's learning to love it, too :)

REALLY! Did you notice the expression on the other singers faces? You can feel the anointing, just by watching and listening.........what must it have been in person.

My brother-in-law is Dennis Sego, who is the son of Lamar Sego. He pastors an Apostolic church in Macon, GA. I recently worked out a new arrangement of "Sorry, I Never Knew You!" for Hettie's upcoming CD.
