Solar Observatories Mysteriously Closed/Offline

Read a report that the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, NM has been evacuated by the FBI over an alleged security issue.

From local law enforcement:

""“The FBI is refusing to tell us what’s going on. We’ve got people up there (at Sunspot) that requested us to standby while they evacuate it. Nobody would really elaborate on any of the circumstances as to why.

The FBI were up there. What their purpose was nobody will say. But for the FBI to get involved that quick and be so secretive about it, there was a lot of stuff going on up there.

There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers but nobody would tell us anything.”""

No word as to what the "security issue" is, and no word as to why the live feed from these other observatories are offline:
  • AXIS 232D Network Dome Camera located in Sydney Australia
  • Webcams located at SOAR Observatory – The Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope located in Chile
  • BRT Tenerife Telescope Webcam located in Spain
  • Webcam located at Mauna Kea observatory at the University of Hawaii Hilo
  • Webcam from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope observatory in Hawaii
  • Webcam at JAT OBservatory in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania

These have gone offline """just as a massive hole has opened up in the Sun’s corona, which means we’re officially on watch for a geomagnetic storm."""

Adding to the mystery is that the POST OFFICE in Sunspot has also been closed and evacuated.

"""The National Solar Observatory in Sunspot New Mexico has been closed since last Thursday.

The post office near Sunspot also remains closed. Its employees have been temporarily transferred to the post office in Cloudcroft, a USPS official told ABC-7.

ABC-7 has confirmed the post office in Sunspot will not be re-opened until further notice, and cannot be re-opened until approved by local law enforcement officials.

ABC-7 Monday spoke with Shari Lifson, who is with Aura, the company that co-manages the Observatory with NMSU. Lifson told ABC 7 there is no time-table for the Observatory to be re-opened.

ABC-7 also reached out the FBI, but did not hear back from the federal agency in time for deadline. The FBI did speak with local law enforcement about the length of the observatory closure.

"They spoke with my sergeant initially and they said that they would be down for a few days so that could be anywhere from a few days to months, from my past experience," said Sheriff Benny House.

The FBI did not tell Sheriff House the reason for the closure.

Sheriff Benny House did tell ABC 7 that his local law enforcement did not have anything to do with either the observatory closure, or the Sunspot post office Closure.

A spokesperson for the United States Postal Service told ABC 7 that they were given specific instructions. "We were told on September 6th that we would be evacuated along with the surrounding area, we were not told why," Rod Sturgeon said, "We were told just to be out of the area."""

Very peculiar. Not that we'll ever know what's going on, of course. National security and all that. "Keep on rockin' in the Free World..."

There's a thread on Reddit wondering if the Chinese have hacked the system there and are using it to spy on activity at the White Sands Missile Range.

Still doesn't explain them evacuating the town and closing down the post office.

This is strange-- and it's the first time I am hearing of this. I did read that there was some kind of storm that would happen soon that would make "The Northern Lights" visible from North America.

Thinking about the people manning the International Space Station and the ramifications to their IMMEDIATE and long-term health if a very strong Geomagnetic Storm is headed our way. Under certain conditions, they could be killed almost instantly. Long-term health complications will include cancer.

Is it just me or does that map show that from about mid country to the east that we could see the Aurora?
