McCain apparently didn't help negotiations
 

much today. By all press accounts now, the meeting blew up and even Secretary Hank Paulson is concerned the bailout may fall apart. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalra...nopoulo-6.html

Apparently, in political theater, John McCain has now sided with House Republicans and after an entire WEEK wasn't familiar with the terms of the 3 page Paulson plan. Some in the meeting said McCain only spoke briefly and in broad general terms and added nothing of detail. Despite that, he apparently decided it was time for a "new plan".

Maybe Obama was right about not interjecting Presidential politics into serious negotiations about the economic crisis at hand.

TR, don't blame me because John McCain decided to parachute into Washington D.C. to supposedly help gain consensus and move the talks forward.

Instead, he's now helped contribute to the stalling of those talks that the Republican President and Treasury Secretary say are needed quickly to avert a financial crisis.

HERE'S THE SITUATION we McCain-sympathizing/Paulson-plan-skeptics/populist-inclined/but we've-got-to-be-responsible-in-a-crisis types face:

1. Something probably needs to be passed soon.

2. There are almost certainly superior alternatives to Paulson or even (especially?) to Paulson-as-modified (see, for example, this).

3. There's not enough time to write a new plan, get a consensus behind it, etc.

So: 4. We need to pass Paulson-as-modified ASAP.

McCain will throw his weight behind it and help get it through. But he will also makes clear that, as president--while of course standing behind all obligations incurred and transactions committed to under the Paulson regime--he's going to take a fresh look. He's going to convene the best people, he'll take a look at all the best ideas that have been put forward (ranging from Hillary Clinton's to Newt Gingrich's, from direct aid to housing to rights offerings by banks to changing accounting rules, etc.), and he will then plan on modifying/improving/adding to the Paulson plan going forward. This is delicate: McCain needs to reassure markets about the current commitments as well as promise further and better reforms. But this is the right position substantively and, I think, politically. It combines the best of McCain's impulses, and the twin requirements of presidential leadership: taking responsibility for what has to be done now, and committing to energetic and bold reform in the near future.

There have been multiple and conflicting stories coming out of Washington today as to what happened. There's was a Democratic politician who was just on CNN less than an hour ago downplaying earlier reports that McCain's presence had in any way contributed to the breakdown. The CNN commentator, John Roberts asked him about it point blank, serving up a softball, but he made it clear that he didn't feel McCain's presence had much of an effect one way or another.

But of course, you tend to believe any bad news about John McCain, and just run with it. Quite predictable, since you seem to be such a slave to your political ideology.

Except, he didn't do that today PO. When asked in the White House meeting if he'd support the bill with modifications he(McCain) refused to "throw his weight behind it".

After agreeing to core principle agreements with Democrats and Senate Republicans, the House Republicans and John McCain balked and want to bring a new plan to the table after a week of modifying the Paulson plan. :ohplease

Apparently, Paulson and Bernanke came back to Capitol Hill tonight to try to repair the mess and get something in writing.

Well, Mike.....your link was from ABCNews....... :D Gotta verify that somewhere else. If they agree, then I will agree.

I find it hard to believe that McCain had a few words to say after cancelling ALL debates and campaign ads. That just doesn't make sense.

We'll keep watching, reading and waiting. :D

No need to heal myself. I'm not ill at all.

I tend to be conservative in my politics, being a right-of-center independent, but I am not a slave to conservative ideology. If you've seen enough of my AFF posts on political/social issues (which apparently you haven't) you would have noticed I have been critical of both Republicans and Democrats on this forum, and I'm not so beholden to a political ideology that I have to look at everything in partisan terms, as you seem to do.
