Study: Conservatives Are Biggest Consumers of Porn

This study was conducted over a 2 yr period. here are some interesting facts from the article (links at the bottom of post):

1. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption

2. The biggest consumer state is Utah

3. 8 of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favored Barack Obama.

4. Church-goers bought less online porn on Sundays:begging

5. Residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriages boasted 11% more porn subscribers than states that don't explicitly restrict gay marriage

The second link list a few more stats. the link given to the actually study findings are in PDF format.

This is not surprising at all. It's rather easy to see through the deceptive "stats".

Take #5. for example. It is no surprise that California is big into porn. Further, it would be no surprise that the conservatives and families would support a law in the same state to outlaw Sodomite marriages. This study suggests, but does nothing to prove the same people who want to restrict porn and perversion are also higher consumers of the same.

Yes. There's no real filter here. Even a "conservative" bastion like Utah has a large number of people who are either not practicing their religion or often extremely antithetical toward that religion. How do you seperate who's who from among the "users" and the "nonusers" in a given state?

It's just the kind of generality and ambiguity that easily allows itself to be used to smear those "up tight" states that have banned gay marriages.

Meanwhile, almost no one in the media seems to have noticed that Dick Cheney's home state of Wyoming was one of the few - if not the ONLY state to actually turn down an "anti-gay marriage" proposal.

Despite their "evil" gun-toting, oil drilling and gay bashing reputation, Wyoming is actually a fairly liberal place. They were the first state to enact Women's Sufferage, the first state to elect a woman to Congress and their juries almost never return a death penalty in a capital murder case. Still, the Lefties love to bash Wyoming. It's always easier to lash out in ignorance than to actually pay attention.

The "research" in this article is lacking. For instance it says "church goers" bought less porn on Sunday, but there was no way for them to tell if the people purchasing actually went to church. Also one of the biggest sellers of porn is hotel chains, which doesn't seem to be accounted for.

It would be foolish to think that conservatives don't purchase porn, but this is a typical media trick that really is trying to pass off the lie yet again that, "Everyone is doing it."

How do they define what a consumer is? Did they get all their data from question and answers? How do they weed out the jokers? Is this all done by question and answer or is this according to network traffic? How many of the "consumers" were bots?

Does consumer refer to 10 individual doing porn 10 times or one individual doing porn 10 times?

How did they determine the user was conservative?

Any survey involving porn is going to be naturally skewed (and wildly inaccurate) by the very nature of the subject. Masters and Johnson knew first hand how hard it was to do "market research" on the topic of sex.

Years ago I read or heard somewhere that
"Figures don't lie, but liars can figure."

I may be a simple old man but over the years I've seen people use "statistics" to prove something they want to prove.

I think I read or heard somewhere that Mark Twain said:
"There are lies,
there are d.... lies,
and then there are statistics"

I may be wrong about these quotes.

I think this can be misleading. It's common knowledge among those in the "lifestyle" that "conservatives" are also quite the majority in swinging and membership in exclusive swinger's clubs.

But let's get down to where the rubber meets the road...being a "conservative" doesn't necessary equal being moral....nor does being a "liberal" mean being immoral. For example...most Libertarians are "conservative"...but many Libertarians are far from "moral". I know devout Catholics who are very moral....but politically liberal.

I agree, with the exception of the bold... I would have to see the research for that - I doubt it.

The majority of exclusive clubs cater to the suburbanite crowd. Most aren't every religious but describe themselves as "conservative" politically.
