What I find "funny" is how some folks can't live for God unless they have a huge set of man-made rules that tell them what to do all of the time. Otherwise they backslide completely. Seems to me they must not have much power in their lives if the only thing that "keeps" them is a set of archaic legalistic rules.

In church, out of church. Constant merry-go-round cause when they fail to keep one of the rules they feel like God doesn't love them and that they might as well go live like the devil.

I'm glad I don't live with that kind of fear.

This post brought back memories of being a teenager in the 1970's in Louisiana. It was amazing the number of teens who were exactly as you described.

They had such a strict legalistic approach to the Gospel that they were constantly "messing up" and falling short of it so their lives were one big merry go round.

They would, like clockwork, pray through once or twice a year (sometimes quarterly) at whatever youth camp, sectional youth meeting, revival, etc that they went to and the guilt just go too heavy.

They would live it for a few months then make a mistake violating their legalism and backslide yet once again until the next time they prayed through.

I remember one particular pretty older girl (probably 18 or 19 to my 14 or 15) who did this a lot moved away for a few months to live with her older brother who attended an ultra con church. She came back convinced that everybody else in our church was going to hell. She no longer believed in open toed shoes, red shoes, etc. Of course that lasted about three or four months then she was totally backslid yet once again.
