Proverbs 22:6

Here is one for you all, just what exactly does the following verse mean.

Pro 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Just what are we to train our children in that they won't depart from it? Doctrines of our church? Or the basic fundementals of being a good citizen, right from wrong. Not the so called standards of our church.

What should we train a child to?

Proverbs 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
Proverbs 22:2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.
Proverbs 22:3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.
Proverbs 22:4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.
Proverbs 22:5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

See all my life I only heard verse 6 quoted and it was preached if we raised our children in the UPCI with all its standards etc that when they grew up they would stay in UPCI. As if this was some special formula to keep our children in the beleif that we keep to be true.

Good grief, are you serious? Didn't those people read the Word? If this is true that is just ridiculous.

For obvious reason I have left UPCI and anything closely resembling it. I was two when my mom came into UPCI, I recieved the holy ghost when I was seven carried licence with them for 10 years and started a church in UPCI. My mom still thinks I will come back because she raised me according to the doctrines of the church. Not. My wife and I attend a great church and all my children and their spouses are saved and love God and are raising my grandchildren to love God. But I did not raise them exactly the same way I was raised. And we all left UPCI about 6 years ago.

I really find that hard to believe, I grew up in a UPCI church and I never heard that before. Strange to me that anyone would think that being a member of a church is what that scripture meant.

Lucky you, but you better beleive it. I know I am getting old but my memory is not that bad lol. How many UPCI churches have you attended. I have men a member of several in my life and I have heard some strange doctrines. I have also been a member of some good ones too not saying all of them are that way. But out in the Pacific Northwest we still have some realy legalistic groups. I attended a church that preached against beards, and wearing only white shirts for the men and that was only the beginning his wife only wore black or dark colors don't think she ever wore anything colorful.

I've attended... several. ;) I have heard it taught in at least two, and it was referred to in private conversations between saints or between the pastor and saints in another. May depend on the area... it isn't a lib/mod/cons thing, because these were three different "grades". But it doesn't work if used that way. One of the men that preached it was raised UPC and his brother (also raised UPC) went Lutheran (or some similar denomination)-pastors a denominal church!! Never did figure out how he justified his family example with that verse.

If it means raise them in the Christian faith, 3 out of our 4 departed. If it means raise them to find their own path, do what they believe is right, be good, honest citizens, love their neighbor, etc., then I guess we did OK.
