Ancient Christian Commentary: Genesis I-II

The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture is a unique commentary series. Scholars and computer technology comb the writings of ancient Christian writers on particular books of the Bible. It is considered to be an ecumenical project with general editor Thomas C. Oden. It is an attempt to bring awareness and understanding to Christians concerning ancient beliefs.

Scholars familiar with ancient Christian writings offer hand-selected portions of these texts. I recently received my review copy on Genesis I-II, free of charge, from InterVarsity Press. There are 204 pages as it covers Genesis 1-11:32. Besides the commentary there is an introduction to Genesis I-II, chronology, biographical sketches, and an appendix of all the Early Christian writings cited.

I remember that Oden made a fan out of John Piper when he took on Greg Boyd and fellow Methodist Clark Pinnock some years back on the "Process Theology" debate that Pinnock had started.

I was still full time in the ministry when Pinnock came out with the "Openess of God." The idea that some of the future is unknown to God because of our free will. This does iron out some apparent conundrums like 1 Samuel 15:29-35, but it is unsatisfying for Evangelicals for obvious reasons.

I'd be truly interested in Oden's findings and his commentary on the Patristic literature concerning Genesis. Oden's been known to be growing ever more "conservative." Plus, he always comes across as a nice man.

I have read a lot of Boyd's books on open theism. There are aspects of it that I find plausible. His book, God of the Possible is interesting.

Personally, I do not think the Openness or the Open Theism model is sufficient, I think it had good intentions but in the end I feel it militates against the integrity of God's divine attributes.

God knows absolutely everything = no original thought ever existed. Sorry don't believe it!

What do you mean by original thought?
