Re: Study Proves Dogs Cant Remember Yesterday!
i'm reading a book right now; The Genius of Dogs, that pretty much supports that. However, dogs are smarter than wolves, and even chimps, in other areas.

Re: Study Proves Dogs Cant Remember Yesterday!
While I don't believe they remember in the same way as humans, they do remember. We got our dog as a stray who followed my sister and mom home one night. She was the most gentle dog you could possibly want.
Unfortunately, we think she was abused by her previous owner. Even if she knew someone, if they wore a baseball cap around her, she would flee like her backside was on fire. It happened one time with my grandpa. She knew him, he'd been around her before; but because he approached her wearing a baseball cap, she ran away and hid in fear. Dogs (and other animals) do remember things. |
Re: Study Proves Dogs Cant Remember Yesterday!
there's this dog that has remembered the 'names' of hundreds--like 800--of his toys; the owner can ask him to go get ________, in another room, and the dog can bring it. Can also differentiate between his toys and toddler's toys. Can infer that a toy being asked for by a name he is unfamiliar with must be the 'new' toy in the room, and brings that. This is apparently not uncommon for dog memory. But apparently will not recall what toy was asked for an hour ago--that kind of memory is about ten minutes max for dogs.

Cant believe people get paid for such "studies". When my Dogs hear walk, ride, or "go" they flip with Joy. Even if its been a month. And how would they remember their name? My 3 can be in the house and if I call one of them THAT ONE will come.
Dogs are truly awesome! |
Re: Study Proves Dogs Cant Remember Yesterday!
I heard dogs can learn over 120 words and what those words refer to by the association we gave to them.
We had a dog for several months with two cats, and it saw me hiss at the cats when they were doing something they shouldn't. It realized that when I hissed the cats were doing something wrong. As soon as I would make a hissing sound to check him out with it, he took off barking and barking and looking for the cats! We had to give the dog away, and we didn't see him again for about a year. The new owner brought him home and I did the test. I hissed. And immediately he remembered the hiss was for the cats when they were in trouble, and barked and barked and looked for them as he always did before. |
Re: Study Proves Dogs Cant Remember Yesterday!
:lol funny you say that, as this book posits the genius of dogs as their being able to communicate with us, and grasp our communications. So, the argument goes that he remembers the meaning of the sound by you, but would not remember a specific instance of it after a short time.

I read somewhere that within the next couple of years, we will have the technology needed to actually read the minds of dogs and communicate with them in real time.
