I got a gas wall heater at Orschelns that doesn't require electricity to operate safely. It wouldn't heat the whole house, but it would sure keep the pipes from freezing and keep one room warm in a pinch. I never installed it. Several plumbers have come and questioned me about that... I remind them that if the electricity goes out to my area, I won't be able to find an electrician for weeks, but I bet I'll be able to find a plumber in no time!
(they laugh and agree with that theory.)
