I agree. Should have never spoken to him and done what the 911 operator said.
You cannot instigate a fight and because you are losing shoot the guy then call it self-defense.
Rather Martin was a gang-banger or not he was just walking and committing no crime at the time. There was no reason for him to comfront Martin.
Martin may have a checkered past, but churches do have ex gang members. Now one is in his grave without a chance to repent.
