You're not too old! There are many players my age out there. I would choose the clan wisely. Spend time with them in their chat channels (vent, teamspeak) to get to know them. That's what we do with all new recruits wanting to join. We want to get to know them and make sure they'd be a good 'fit' for our clan.
And not all clans require their members to pay monthly fees. Ours is supported solely by the Admin/Captains. (and google ads!)
On the other hand...I wouldn't mind paying a small monthly fee...You can spend more on entertainment in one night at the movies than you can for a whole month of gaming.
