It does however, seem to me that as individuals we have some responsibility to appropreate that finished work to ourselves.... but Im a crazy three stepper that actually thinks the words "Obey the Gospel" is in the bible and actually means something....

Appropriating the finished work is a far cry from thinking we must exert human goodness in order to excel in the spiritual. When I think of people helping God out I think of people using their human "righteousness" (joke) to excel.
We have to appropriate the work of the cross by faith, but not through thinking our goodness and righteous deeds award us anything whatsoever.
