From my understanding, from an article in The Rolling Stone; people were paid (anything from $150-500) and were asked to sign a waiver before filming was done (after being told that a documentary about life in America was being made). The subjects were aware that they were being filmed. It's be interesting to know if the church recieved any money and how much.
