God made Adam of the dust; But thought it best to make me first;
So I was made before the man; To answer God’s most holy plan;
My body, he did make complete; But without arms, hands or feet;
A living creature, I became; Adam gave to me my name;
Then from his presence, I withdrew; Who Adam was, I never knew;
I traveled on both day and night; To follow man, was my delight;
Thousands, both young and old, by my death, great light beholds;
The Lord in me, did something see; It was a living soul in me;
A soul from me, my God did claim, and took from me that soul again;
And when from me that soul had fled; I was as when I first was made;
So without hands, feet, or soul; I now roam from pole to pole;
No feat of death doth trouble me; In to the future, I cannot see;
To happiness I cannot go; (or to the grave, or hell below);
The scripture I cannot believe; For right or wrong, I cannot perceive;
Altho in them my name is found; It seems to me as empty sound;
