One can play both sides of an issue, in the spirit of stress testing an idea without fear of being hung for it. It doesn't take much to create a rumor and put someone on the defensive. Unfortunately, most of these sort of AFF conversations are done behind closed doors. For example, Detroit. These young are damned if they do, damned if they don't. Many have asked elders with 1 of 2 responses: 1) sharp rebukes, or brash statements that stop question asking and discussion or 2) agreement (believe it or not), only to be rebuked publicly (well not them exactly, but their "kind) so they can score political points. So, they choose to talk to other brothers that are safe and they get bashed. Then they talk to people outside the organization and get bashed. Point being, don't ask questions. That's freaky isn't it.
