Maybe I'm strange... but I personally see no problem with lively music in Church. I'm of the persuasion that we have some of the best music in all of Pentecost at my Church. We have it thumping and jumping most of the time but can, at a moment's notice, swing our worship back down to the precious old songs like "Amazing Grace" and "To Be Like Jesus".

One thing I do regularly is during a red hot shout down type serve I'll shut the music down and turn the musicians and praise singers loose. Ironically, the passion for worship only intensifies during that time. I do that for two reasons: To shut the mouths of any critics that may be there saying, "It's all about the music" and to give those that labor so hard on our instruments the opportunity to worship OFF the instruments for a while.

Having said that I would refer back to someone's earlier post that mentioned Saul calling for David. OBVIOUSLY there is a magnificent difference in the spirit of Saul vs. the spirit of David. Could this be the reason:

When Saul was troubled in his soul he called for a MUSICIAN (David) to 'soothe' him.
When David was troubled in his soul he called for a PREACHER (Nathan) to move him.

My Brothers and Sisters, there is a place for both but NOTHING take the place of a truth preaching Man of God in your own life.

TRUTH PREACHING might just be the key in this conversation.
