As we know discovery could mean even death. Remember there were guys like Saul and the boys seeing to it. When rest finally came to the Church it must have been huge relief. Wanting to love the Lord together brought growth and naturally that brings a need for more space. It is natural for Saints to want to meet in a nice place. Saints in other parts of the world still are meeting in underground assembly's wishing they could have what we have. So! Be thankful and not synical.

Actually, they met house to house regardless of persecution. When persecution ended they pretty much became catholics and took over secular court buildings and began building their own special meeting houses.
They did not meet house to house because they feared being discovered. They were constantly at the temple and in synagogues witnessing, in the midst of persecution. They weren't trying not to be seen.
