Plead the Blood?
I've heard the phrase 'plead the Blood' all my life, but never really thought much about it or studied it, and I've never used the phrase in prayer, because I never understood exactly what it meant - and still don't. Recently I started to wonder just exactly where in scripture is the inspiration taken to use this vague phrase in prayer. Every time I hear it used, it is in relation to a whole host of things ('I plead the Blood over [cars, house, finances, the President, Congress, children, etc.]'). It seems to me like it is a piece of tradition that maybe at one time was worded differently and possibly had a different meaning, but now has become almost an incantation of sorts with no biblical background.
I understand the principle of Jesus' sacrifice, and how he was the spotless lamb, and that his blood was shed in our stead. I just don't see anywhere in scripture where anyone pled the Blood over themselves, others, or inanimate objects or finances. I also don't see why you would need to plead for Jesus' blood to be applied in your life if you are already saved. Is His blood somehow less powerful in the life of a believer unless they plead for it regularly?
Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me at this point, but if anyone has some scriptures or logic to explain this, I am open to understanding.

The blood of Christ has already been applied to everything that is going to be covered by it. Sins of the whole world are covered, God has already put into the creation all that we need. We simply need to earnestly pray to know what is right in every situation we find ourselves, what is the choice of life in this circumstance. God has set before us "...life and death..." it is our responsibility to find and chose life, and to walk in it.
'Pleading the blood' is a phrase the is used mostly in Pentecostal circles, but really doesn't have a biblical foundation. We don't have to beg God to do what He has already done, but we must align ourselves with Him for the flow of His provision in each situation. He is present and is found when we turn to Him, we have His attention when He has ours. But we cannot order Him around as our errand boy, He has in the DNA of the creation answers for every need. Everything eventually will be good, but we may walk thru many hard places along the way.

This pretty much sums up my thinking on this. Doesn't make sense that we would need to ask for a 're-application' of his atonement every day.
'Tis a Pentecostal tradition, as I suspected. Traditions are such odd, evolving things... We humans love our traditions, do we not? It makes so much more sense to our human minds to atone for our sins by performing rituals, incantations, and self-punishment.
Better to stick with the Bible, I think.

Re: Plead the Blood?
I think it does have a biblical basis. BLOOD is an encapsulation of the entire concept of the finished work of the cross. We are actually proclaiming we have a right to whatever we plead the blood for based upon the provision made by the cross. In other words, I claim my right to this prayer request based upon the fact that the cross accomplished everything I need and this is part of that provision I am seeking. IOW, I plead the blood for this thing.

I was remembering that someone had answered this question well and came to look for the thread.
I am pleading the blood of Jesus Christ over a young woman's life right now who is set on destroying her life and that of her family. Jesus, I plead your blood over her addiction. I plead your blood over her mind, over her heart, over her body. I plead your blood that she would come to herself and look up to you for help in her time of need. Jesus, I pray that you could reach her before she goes too far. She says she doesn't want to be a Christian, but I believe she is not in her right mind. Set her free, in Jesus name.

It is pleasing to God, I do believe, that we trust in Him and his precious saving blood ! P.S. Dear friend, please keep my son in your prayers also! Thank you ~ God bless
