Canadians Idle And It's Hurting Our Wallet, Our Health And The Environment
(NC)—Idling your car, or letting it run needlessly, is a waste of gas, money and it's hurting the environment, too. Natural Resources Canada provides some pretty convincing data on its idling Web site, idling.gc.ca
For example, did you know that Canadian drivers could save approximately $85 a year just by turning off their cars instead of idling? Canadians idle approximately five minutes per day, using up almost 90 litres of gas a year, which at 95 cents a litre or more sure adds up. The cost goes up even further in winter when Canadians idle more than 75 million minutes a day.
That's the same as idling one vehicle for 144 years.
And what about the old story that idling uses less gas than starting and stopping your engine? Not true says Natural Resources Canada. Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine.
If every Canadian motorist stopped idling for just five minutes a day, every day of the year, we could avoid sending 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide into the air, the principal greenhouse gas.
Vehicle emissions not only cause climate change, but also poor air quality, resulting in health problems such as asthma, lung damage and other respiratory illnesses. Climate change also results in extreme weather events and is causing severe damage to delicate ecosystems, particularly in Canada's northern regions, where ice flows are melting more quickly and plant and wildlife species are trying to adapt, usually unsuccessfully, to a warmer environment. Polar bears for example, are suffering depleting numbers due to the melting ice flows which they normally depend on for travel.
If you'd like to learn more about idling, you can download all kinds of useful information, including eye-catching, ready-to-use posters, brochures and stickers with slogans such as "Idling gets you nowhere" or "Turn your engine off" from the Natural Resources Canada website: www.idling.gc.ca or call 1-800-387-2000.
