I love to sing. I'm not a good singer, but I love to sing. I grew up without a TV, but always had a radio playing, and I had a cassette player in my car as a teenager. I also had a piano when I was young, and taught myself how to play it. I played for our school chapel when I was in high school.
The Bible speaks several times about singing a new song to the Lord. David writes most about that topic, but other passages mention it as well.
Music, with or without words, impacts our minds and souls and can make us feel happy, sad, romantic, or fearful. We sing to our babies to help them sleep. We watch a movie and know when the scary part is about to happen. We attend a funeral and are familiar with that musical sound also.
God loves to hear us sing. He loves our music. He used music and singing many times, even to fight battles! Paul and Silas sang in jail and God answered their prayer. Miriam and her friends sang and played tambourines. David played music to soothe Saul's mind and soul.
David writes in Psalms to 'sing unto the Lord a new song', and makes that statement several times throughout the book of Psalms. God loves music, and we are told to sing with instruments also. Music can be our song when we have no words. We don't need a voice to sing unto God!
We also don't need a reason to sing. So often, it's easy to sing when we are happy and feeling good, but what do we sing when we feel bad? To God, we sing praises, and those praises can come from our voices or our instruments.
When we are depressed, sing a new song.
When we are lonely, sing a new song.
When we are sick, sing a new song.
When life kicks us in the teeth, sing a new song.
Let everything that hath breath, whether they feel like it or not, praise the Lord!
