Delta

They lost our daughter in law´s suitcase and still have never found it...some have wanted to help her buy some clothes you may do so by sending whatever earmarked to our home address...thanks...

Won't the airlines pay for the loss?
They use to have a policy for such things.

I don't have any first hand experience, but a friend of mine had that happen.
She called and let them know it was still missing and I think they were given $1500.00 to cover the loss.
I know there's a limit on how much they will pay out.

Please encourage your son to call and frequently until they get an answer.
I'd make sure I talked to the superiors.

I have had suitcases lost in international flights - though they were always returned after a week or two. It is my understanding that most airlines no longer automatically insure them beyond a basic clothing stipend or even less.

Delta has never lost a bag of mine so I haven't had to go through this.

However, according this page, they should have gotten a reference number from Delta.

Expense Reimbursement
Delta requires that receipts be presented for all reasonable expense reimbursements incurred due to the delay of a passenger’s bag. Reasonable expenses generally are $50 for the first 24hrs and $25 per day for the next 4 days the bag is delayed. I've had bags lost by Delta three times lately, but they've always turned up eventually. The weirdest one was when my bag ended up in Tulsa, and I hadn't even flown through there. Delta is usually pretty good about finding them and delivering them to you, as long as you have the luggage tag receipt that they give you at check in.

I have learned to take an extra outfit and underwear in my carry on, as well as small toiletries, just for that reason.
